Kenmore (read: whirlpool) topload washing machine m#110 2301200 Based on prior posts, and lacking an ohm meter I hooked up some wires to a battery and a flashlight bulb to test the lid switch...blink! The light came on so I think (?) THAT switch is not the problem. I'm guessing something else down the line (electrically) or perhaps the pump--anyone have any clues for me? M.

Might help if we knew what the washer was doing or not doing?

sorry, not used to the forum forms. Washing machine fills, agitates then ... when it should be draining (then spinning) comes to a complete stop and does nothing. M.

Does sound like the lid switch area, might by pass it to see if you then have power down to the motor for drain/spin....might not be making good contact when closing the lid...

I ran a wire to short it...still nada. I'm thinking the pump might be it. I just removed it (floor ALL wet now) I can move the impellers but they don't spin freely--should they?

No, there will be some resistance....ok let us start over...fills and agitates but will not drain or spin....is the washer dead for drain/spin or is the motor humming when it should be draining/spinning...

Plus you can run the drain/spin cycle with the pump off of the motor to see if the motor will run or not, turn the water off first tho....

The washer is dead when it should be draining (not a sound.) --but when I switch it to the end of the spin cycle it hums. This when I am running a wire from the gray wire to the brown at the lid switch gizmo, in an effort to simulate lid being closed. Thanks BTW for your help--- M.

I tried your last post--The motor runs and the gizmo spins the pump shaft when it is agitating. When I had the pump hooked up, I could see through the plastic outer tub that bubbles were coming up from the pump, through the hose. Not much pressure though, if that is what it was supposed to be doing (circulating water.)

The pump would not cause the motor to be dead for drain/spin...if the motor runs for drain/spin when the lid switch is by-passed but does not when the lid switch is installed and not by-passed I am still thinking bad lid switch...if it is good time to get our your volt meter/stick to see where you have lost voltage to the motor...

Pegi wrote:The pump would not cause the motor to be dead for drain/spin. This is true, Pegi, and that's weird-- that's another reason I wanted FW to repeat the test, might be a mistake. ADDED: It was the humming at the end that made me suspect the pump. I am suspecting electrical because remember the motor turns the shaft but only during the agitation mode. When it is supposed to be draining, the motor does nothing. I bought an ohm meter (cheapo) can one of you walk me through testing wires (using that neato diagram might work but the wires are different colors)? I would name some of my fruit trees after you (the only honor I can think of...)

Ok, I repeated it, just in case...with the wire simulating the lid closure, (which does not seem to have ANY effect) the pump pulled off the shaft...the motor turns the shaft during agitation but when it should be draining is silent or hums (hard to tell from the manual knob exactly where in the cycle we are.) No spin. Keep in mind that the tub is half full of water (so spin would be shut off anyway?) that is why it hums??

Farm wahine wrote:...the motor turns the shaft during agitation but when it should be draining is silent or hums Which is it: silence or hums? If hum, and you're sure that the hum is coming from the motor? If so, then I would pull the motor of its mount, brace it with my foot, and then try to run it again in spin. If it runs, you have a bad transmission. If it doesn't run, then you have a bad motor.

Corrected. m# 110 23012100 Is there some way I can tell whether my shorty wire is doing the job in fooling the machine into thinking the lid is closed (we're dealing with an electrical idiot here, bear with me)? Can I go to the pump end of the wire and see if there is any juice or something? Once I've confirmed it is actually being turned on, then can I try the timer route... which is what? Why would a timer stop it from draining? Also about the humming and hawing... when the mark on the dial is at "off" is when I'm hearing the humming--which totally doesn't make sense to me. So I'm wondering if, because it is painted with such a broad brush, the notch is really sposed to be pointing to spin, which it is trying to do but can't because.... It is definitely SILENT when it should be draining. No juice to motor. nada. I'm going to try to post some photos...this site is so cool. Well, you guys MAKE it cool. M.

Samurai Appliance Repair Man wrote: Farm wahine wrote: Last part, "If it doesn't run, then you have a bad motor.", is not true. We know the motor is ok because it agitates ok!!!!! It's either the jammed tranmission, (which I doubt), bad timer, or speed control switch(if it has one). Hook the lid switch back up and put the timer to the position where you had it when you heard it hum and turn it on with lid closed. If you hear the hum open the lid, if hum stops you can be pretty sure it's in spin and the motor is what you hear humming, (probably will be the reversing contacts in timer).

Tried to find wire diagram......... Take the motor off and set it on the floor. ( pump off the motor )........ close lid switch circuit....( put your foot on the motor ), Set timer to agitate, does it spin? Set timer to drain/ spin cycle, does it spin in the other direction? If you cannot tell which direction it is spinning, attach a small piece of duct tape on the motor shaft and make a flag/ flap..... The reversing of the motor is done in the timer...... keep us posted.....
