I strongly agree with the terminater. I've seen(and smelled) the same thing before. Anytime some one painted, varnished, or oiled there floor it burned off a strange odor like you were explaining. This smell lasts for a long time.

I have reserved myslef to finally believe what you all have been saying all along. I guess its the Murphy's Oil Soap even though we've used that stuff many, many times before and stored the mops the same way every time and NEVER had this problem.

I also have a Whirlpool dryer that just today started to smell like kerosene or burnt something. I may have to agree with the Murphys Oil Soap therory because after i've taken apart my dryer and cleaned it all out the smell is still there and the only thing that has changed is that we are getting French Doors put in and they've been painting today with OIL BASED PAINT. Today was the first day for that. I may wait until they're done and the smell disappates and see if it goes back to normal. I've read that painting inside the house can affect the dryers smell. We'll see. By the way, hilarious posts.

I just ran 2 loads in the dryer after airing out the house from the paint smell and the clothes turned out fine. I think we're on to something here.

I've also experienced the "kerosene" smell from my dryer. After several loads of laundry I went online and did a google search on the problem, which brought me to this form. And also, I just finished painting my basement floor.... with an oil based paint! I guess that's the problem! My dryer is not a "Whirlpool" but an "Inglis model IJ80001"

Sorry for bumping an older post, but this is really an unusual experience. Hey, great forums... I hope to visit regularly.

Thanks folks for your entertaining and detailed accounts. I kept saying that it's only just started happening since we had our floors done (with oil based poly), although everytime I use the gas stove I smell kerosine... I had been told that the kerosine smell was due to a gas leak ... Thanks for the confirmation of the connection!

Just a note on this subject...the kerosene odor (or similar to charcoal lighter fluid) can be produced by a variety of sources. Paint(Kilz is the worst I have seen), varnish, stains, wood polish, adhesives, bug spray treatment used by exterminators, some carpet cleaners...the list goes on. Even when the chemical can no longer be noticed it still may create this odor when the fumes are drawn into any burner. The smell also will be present at gas stoves/ovnes when in use which is a good confirmation that it is not the dryer.

If the odor is only present when a burner is on (dryer, stove, waterheater, etc) then some chemical/fume is present and being drawn into the combustion process.

Best solution is ventilation. Turn on bathroom exhaust fans, crack open the windows. The dryer on air setting with no clothes in it makes a great exhaust.
