I've got an LG WM1812CW front-loader. As I've posted here before, we have an issue with clothes that come out smelling bad sometimes. (You can search the forum for my full account.)

Tonight, though, after washing something I feared had pushed some stuff through the drain pump filter, I thought I'd check it. I pulled the little door off the bottom left, and, remembering that last time I just unscrewed the drain pump filter plug and let a cup water gush out in the process, I thought I'd drain it first. So I pulled the little plug on the small hose adjacent to the filter plug.

What came out was black and a bit thick. :yikes: I first thought I had let some kind of lubricant out of the works. Quick...put the plug back in. Then I looked at what came out, and noticed it was very, very dirty water, with some black flakes in it. It smells a bit "off," but nothing too nauseating. I put the plug back in the hose, and instead unscrewed the big drain filter plug, and got my expected cup of clean-looking water (and nothing in the filter itself).

My questions: What IS that black stuff? Is it possibly responsible for my stinky clothes problem? I've done the Cascade/bleach thing a couple of times now.

Have you checked under the bottom Lip of the rubber Gasket inside the Washer?

That's where you'll usually find the black mold on all FL's.

The inside lip of the boot on mine does have some mold stains, but it's all dead (and odorless). It appeared early despite my best efforts. I now wipe it after each wash and even spray some bleach in there from time to time.

What I'm curious about, though, is what's up with the black water in the drain zone?

Thanks for that.

Does your vinyl tube ever have any gunk in it now?

To be honest, I haven't looked at it again since the day I wrote that last post. My problem was that the hose was broken and water was leaking out of the bottom of the machine. After getting a good look at it, it's obvious that any water that finds its way into this hose will never find its way out again unless you pull out the drain plug and drain it manually, which, now that I think about it, is not a bad idea.

Since you raised the question I went and drained the hose to see what I'd get. I got about 8 ounces of somewhat hazy, soapy looking but clear water out of the hose. It wasn't dirty at all and it just smelled like soap. When I replaced the hose with the clear vinyl tubing I made it a bit longer than stock so I could really get it pulled out and drained properly. I'm going to keep an eye on this and be sure to check it / drain it every couple of months. One nice side benefit to the clear vinyl tubing is that, after pulling it out from the front of the machine, you can see what's in it without having to pull the drain plug.

I am guessing that whatever the compound is that LG uses for the drain hose may be breaking down internally due to the chemicals and bleach used to wash the clothes. This doesn't make a lot of sense but it's the only thing I can think of. The black, awful smelling residue that came out of the damaged hose in my machine was thin and watery but that was likely because there was a break in the hose and the water from the drum was leaking out through it. Since you say the liquid that came out of your drain hose was thick and black, I'm guessing the hose is breaking down internally but has not yet broken through.

I would suggest replacing the hose as soon as possible as a means of preventing a potential leak in the not too distant future. You may also find this is the source of your odor problem with this appliance.

Good luck. I hope this solves your problem. Let us know.
