I can feel my blood pressure rising rapidly, so I'm hoping someone can tell me it's going to be all right.
I've finally got the laundry area back to normal after having to replace our old Kenmore front-loader with a new one . They delivered it and hooked it up on Thursday, checked for leaks, etc. (although I had to call them back as they were leaving for them to level it). The plumber came yesterday to reconnect the dryer and help me mount it back on top of the washer, and now I'm all set. Or so I thought.
When I first checked it out and peeled off the new machine stickers and everything, I noticed that the rubber around the door looked a little weird. I didn't really think anything of it because, after all, it's brand new. Well today I just finished a load of laundry and as I was removing the clothes from the washer, I took a closer look at the rubber and felt around the perimeter. I can feel an inch long cut in the rubber! I don't make a habit of washing knives or other sharp instruments in my laundry, so I can only assume it was like that when it was installed. If this machine were 10 years old, I might live with that as long as it doesn't leak (it doesn't). But this is a brand new machine.
I'll call Sears and b!tch about it properly, but I thought I'd ask here just to be ready for any bad news. Please tell me this is a simple fix and something they can do without my having to take apart and disconnect everything again.
Please...

I think I may have panicked for nothing. After feeling around a bit more, It looks like this is supposed to be that way and that the "cut" is just an intentional opening in the rubber to allow for some venting or something like that. Here's a picture from inside the tub looking out. It looks a little too neat to be accidental.

| that looks like the water chute from the dispenser housing...that's how the detergent and other products get into the tub, perfectly normal EXCEPT that it looks like the bellows is torn on both sides of the chute. the hole in the bellows should be just big enuff to accept the chute snuggly so you might still have a problem....i see a visit from a&e service in your future. don't wait call today!

Thanks, all. You know, the more I look at it, the more it looks like it's fine. I can see the seam molded into the rubber to allow for the plastic duct and the slit is right in line with it. No rough edges and it's symmetrical and even on both sides of the plastic duct. I'll watch closely for any leaks, but I think it's all good. Fingers crossed.

Okay, I know I should know...but define HE soap please. We've been using All Free & Clear since as long as I can remember. We prefer liquid rather than powder and any of the perfumed stuff makes our allergies kick in. I'm happy to hear specific recommendations as we'll need to buy some more soon.

| HE=High Effency. front loaders have to use HE soap and no more than 1-2 table spoons per load....suds is the enemy of front load washers, HE soap does not suds.....

It'll be labeled HE...
Powder is less sudsy than liquid.
Tide HE Liquid seems to be really sudsy (not good).

Ah, yes. I've been doing some searching since I posted that. Thanks. For those who use powder, do you toss it in with the clothes or do you use the dispenser? I remember the powder clumping up and not dissolving properly back when my parents used to use it, but granted, that was a few decades ago. I'll have to look around.

In the Dispenser.. try it.. depends on machine..
also:
We sometimes add OxiClean or Sears Detergent w/ OxiClean.
Church & Dwight makes A&H, OxiClean, Brillo, and (yes)Kaboom, among other brands:
http://www.greatcleaners.com/
Some Sears HE powder washing detergent has OxiClean
On-line & at stores: Half price sale till 10/04/08 Sears Oxi Clean Formula on sale
I leave an empty plastic "gallon ice cream bucket" weighed down with a brick, in the utility tub right under the washer drain hose.
Even after the washer has finished it's cycle, I can always see a sample of the "final rinse" water.
No need to empty it, it'll get flushed out with the next wash load.
Also, you can use up to 1 cup of vinegar (not for silk) in the f/s dispenser in every load to help eliminate the soapy residue build-up.

Thanks very much. I noticed that sale on the Sears stuff and read rave reviews about it. Might have to give it a try.
