OK. Got to screwing around and ended up fixing my own post/problem. Here are the steps that worked for me:

Tools needed: Philips screwdriver, 5/16" socket or nut driver, lubricant

*Remove lid to soap, softner, bleach dispenser. (I think this was necessary)
*Remove door and opposite side hinge blanks
*Remove front cover
*Remove 5/16" bolts from lid brackets on front of machine
*Tilt lid back. This exposes the top of the latch assembly
*Temporarily re-hang door. Don't need screws
*Close and latch door to rotate the rotating gear latch so rear flat side is visible
*Lubricate the rear, flat side of rotating gear latch with good lube
*I also lubricated the side pivot points of the rotating gear latch
*Open and close door with ease and impress the heck out of wife
*Reverse the disassembly order to put machine back together
*Have a homebrew and celebrate all the money you just saved!

This worked for me. The door opens and closes easier than the day we bought the machine in 2000. Don't know if there is wear on the rotating gear latch that will make this "quick fix" a short term one but it is great for now.

If I don't impress the Wif it'll at least give me an excuse to make a trip to the kegerator for a cold one.
