Grasshopper begs Master's assistance with this washer(piece of crap) again.

It fills and empties but that's about it.  It also smells like a campfire.
I opened the front and found that the water pump in the bottom right looks
like it has gotten really scorched(this really doesn't make sense to me).
I am able to view most of the belt and it appears fine.
I pulled on the belt and can turn the motor and I assume the transmission
a short distance.

Please dispense more of your gracious wisdom upon this poor grasshopper.:(

Start washer with water level set for small load and cold/cold temp setting. Eyeball the motor, belt, and clutch when the unit calls for agitate and spin cycle. Post back observations. Is there a lot of black dust under the clutch and pulley? Litle plasstic fan on pump gets dirty from regular dust and belt and clutch dust. Doesn't affect pump except it looks nasty.

Thank you for responding!  :D
I performed the test.  The machine hums and then smoke begins to rise
from the lower side of the motor.
I see no signs of particles or dust (other than household yuck) under the
pulley or motor.

Remove belt and repeat, If motor does not run freely, then that's your problem. If motor runs freely, then transmission is probably the culprit. Try turning the large pulley to see if tranny is locked.

whassup beagle . to remove the belt on your POS GE washer your gonna have to release da tension. do this by loosening the 4  3/8" nuts under the motor- don't remove , just loosen. this allows motor to slide toward tranny , giving enuff belt slack to remove said belt...cool???

Okay.  Here's the follow up on the second(now beltless test).

the machine hums only....no action at all.  I now stop it before signs of smoke.

The clutch turns but seems to grind.
The motor shaft turns freely by hand.
The pully on bottom of tranny turns only so far each way before giving me resistance.

What might I do now?  :?  This machine was built 06/99.  I've already replaced the agitator coupler about a year ago.
Does it deserve further repair?  Or for the approx. $250.00 for the new motor w/clutch and belt, should I put that toward a newer machine?

I'm about ready to take this thing to a field somewhere and finish it off.
Any ideas what caliber would do the best job? <g>

LOL  So right.  Thanks!  :bothbarrels:

As for getting a newer machine, any recommendations?  Or even suggestions of
brands not worthy of my family of six's laundry?

As much as I enjoy the help I receive here, I do not wish to return (at least not with washing machine issues) too soon!  :peace:

Need I say, avoid GE like the plague. Also not very fond of Frigidaire.

Like most techs you ask, my favorite machine is the whirlpool Direct-drive top-loader,

sold in many guises ( WP, Kitchen aid, maytag, roper, estate, Kenmore...) just make sure it's the direct-drive- no belts.

Front loaders, my pick is the WP Duet- although the gap is narrowing between these units , IMHO.

Happy shopping!:yum:

Thanks for the responses.

I'm hearing that Whirlpool(in the last couple of years) started making Maytag with commercial grade parts trying to get the old "nothing to do/fix" name back.
This seems to be the 5700 and 5800 models.

As you can tell, I'm leaning toward Maytag over Whirlpool.  They seem to be similarly priced with same load sizes, wash options, but Maytag seems better made.

What is your take on this?  True/not true/only true to a point?

Also, I can only fit a top loader in my washroom.  Water heater sits in front of washer.
I know....wierd!  Area once was the garage.  Now it's a Den with washer, dryer and water heater in the closet.

These machines are virtually identical mechanically, the only diff being the control panel and features.

My last advice? Buy the unit  with the features you will actually use, at the mid -price point.  Not the cheapest-not the most expensive, as long as it is the DD.

Hello KurtiusInterupptus,
Thank you so much for your help and guidance!  :clapping:
I managed to purchase a brand new Maytag 5700 for 10% off retail.
It was delivered yesterday and has pretty much been running ever since!
The washer sounds so different from our old GE that the noises will take some getting used to, but it sounds so much stronger.  Hurray!

Once again I must say "Thank You" to all of the wonderful people who share their knowledge on this forum!   :notworthy:
Though, please do not take me wrong when I say I hope I do not need to "dip into this well of knowledge' anytime soon.  :)

Best wishes,
Becky.........just call me Beagle
