I have a maytag neptune front load washer, Model MAH 3000AWW
serial # 19 1104 21 UB.
The washer works ok with a small load, but the motor struggles with a normal size load. The motor is very noisy as it tries to start. Reading other peoples symptoms and problems led me to a few tests:
1. The tub does spin freely by hand. The bearings are not binding.
2. All three phases of the motor have 2.1 OHMS.
3. THere is 120 volts to the line voltage connector on the motor control board.
What should I do now?

| ARE THERE MORE TESTS THAT SHOULD BE DONE? I HATE TO BUY A MOTOR IF THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE THAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. IS THERE A VOLTAGE SPEC THAT THE MOTOR SHOULD GET? Last edited on Thu May 1st, 2008 00:00 by M BRYANT

Just came from the some model....the infamous R-11... new board and new wax motor and away it spins. The sounds you hear (motor struggling to start)sounds like_________??.... The job I just completed, theirs was making a sound on start up (agitate) cycle. the load was large, full load, If you listen real close and to the rear, it was the belt slipping on the large driven pulley. (It is made of aluminum) not a squeak but a grunt..... is it possible your belt is slipping?

| THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP SO FAR. A LITTLE MORE INFORMATION. THE NOISE THAT THE MOTOR MAKES IS A CLICKING NOISE WHEN IT TRIES TO START. IF THE MOTOR IS SPINNING, IT HAS VERY LITTLE POWER. I REMOVED THE BELT, AND IT TOOK VERY LITTLE FORCE TO STALL THE MOTOR. I PERFORMED THE MOTOR PHASE TEST WITH THE WASHER IN DELAY, AND J-4 CONNECTOR UNPLUGGED, AS DESCRIBED IN THE MANUAL. THE MOTOR RUNS IN ALL THREE PHASES, BUT CLICKS AT START ON TWO OF THE THREE. THE CLICKING IS THE SAME AS WHEN IT IS LOADED.

THANKS FOR THE HELP. AFTER A LITTLE TIME READING THE MANUAL, AND SOME TESTS WITH MY MULTIMETER, I FOUND THAT THE MOTOR CIRCUIT WAS NOT POWERING ONE PHASE OF THE MOTOR. I REPLACED THE MOTOR AND CONTROL BOARD WITH THE UPDATED STYLE KIT. THE WASHER WORKS LIKE NEW.

This noise is often caused by a one of the phases missing to the motor. Pull the tech sheet from inside the control panel and go to the motor test procedure. You'll need to check for the presence of all three voltage phases to the motor. If one of them's missing, you need the motor and control board kit that Sublime Master Reg linked you to. Here it is again:
