The door on my Kenmore Front Loader (Model 417, 2003) is stuck and won't open. I tried turning on and off the timer, restarting, spinning and rewashing. Repairman said it'll cost slightly less to fix it ($400) than to buy a new one. He said we would have to break the door latch open. I need a second opinion.

$400!? Great leapin' geckos, how do these hacks and charlatans stay in business? And how do people find them?

No, you don't pry the door open, just pull hard. The door catch will break, that's a couple of bucks. And then the door latch assembly will need to be replaced because that's what failed in the first place. But that ain't anywhere near $400.

Post your complete model number and I can tell you more.

Here's the door latch assembly:

And here's the door strike

With shipping, your total parts cost would be about $90.  I don't know what your parts changing money charges for labor but, as a comparison, I charge $149 per completed repair.  So, my total fee, parts and labor, for this job would be around $240, with a one year parts and labor guarantee.

I was able to force the door open with nothing seeming to break  The machine still works but now I have to force the door open each time since the automatic release doesn't work.

Any suggestions on what to do next? Or do I have just have to live with just opening the door forcefully every time and just pray that teh machine doesn't break. Thanks.

i think you're missing a pretty clear suggestion, he's provided you with links to show you how to replace your FAILED DOOR LATCH ASS'Y - see the links above that he's provided, and then go to the bottom of the page to order a new DOOR LATCH.
