We have a Frigidaire front loading washer (model FWT445GES1) that we thought was bulletproof...until my mother stayed at our house last weekend. She apprently used powder detergent successfully for two loads, then the machine began to sporadically not-start, and stop mid-cycle once started. Now it won't start at all.

I'm considering nick-naming my mother "The Crusher" for killing what used to be a perfectly reliable and much-needed appliance.

Any recommendations, Sensei?

Washer does not start:

Dispenser drawer is not completely closed. Close dispenser drawer.

good suggestion  8-)

...but of course we've tried that...and we've tried clearing out any excess dry powder detergent from the drawer and the funneling tubes connecting the drawer to the main washing compartment.

what to do, what to do, hmmm

while machine is running give some lil tugs on the door and see if the machine quits

the door lock/latch might be worn and the clothes hitting the door might be causing it to open a switch and stop the machine

doh!  missed the wont run at all part

does the door lock light come on when you pull the timer knob out?

if the lock light is not on your drawer might still be at fault

no, the light doesn't come on and the door doesn't lock...literally nothing happens when you pull the Start knob.

so you think it's the drawer? like it's either actually not closing all the way, or it's got some sensor that's telling the system that it's not closed all the way?

Yes, it could be the drawer reed switch (magnetic sensor) that senses when the drawer is closed.

#12 in the diagram on PDF page 2 (upper right corner of the page) back of washer,

senses when magnet #8 in drawer gets near it.

If you could test the connections with a meter...

hmm, ok, I'll check it out. I guess it's possible that some of the powder got into the nooks and crannies in the back of the drawer compartment where we can't see.

I'll update on our progress.

does the plumbing that connects the liquid detergent area of the drawer with the main washing compartment have any other sensors in it that would be tripped if there were a clog of some kind?

fiddled and fuddled with this until I found that it's definitly not the drawer...it's the door! the door is not latching properly. I kindof twisted and torqued it until it latches securely, but it's still not totally 100%. would this be a door latch replacement or is there a shade-tree method for getting the door to latch securely?

its the door latch, yours will probably require the kit to update the machine for the current latch assembly

requires some rewiring, but comes with easy instructions

free tip, dont bother changing the concrete weight, i never do and have never had a problem

Ohhh-kaaay, I am going to get the replacement kit. Before I do, I've been instructed to "MAKE SURE" the kit above is indeed the correct one. So, I must ask; is the correct part number absolutely positively 820920?

from the FWT445GES1 Parts Manual above, it would be:

Frigidaire Lock-door assy part # 131269400 , which, when typed into the yellow search box at top of page, yields RepairClinics part # 820920

Any part ordered from RepairClinic can be returned within 30 days for a refund (less shipping)
