When the washer goes into the agitate mode there is a loud thumping.  The noise is somewhat less with the spin cycle but still evident.  The agitator does perform correctly and it spins correctly.  I removed the front panel to try to narrow down the noise culprit and from what I could tell it is coming from the idler arm assembly.  I don't know how much this thing is suppose to move while operating but it bounces around quite a bit.  Is this something you ran across before and is it fixable?

Thanks

Wayne

The belt may be frayed or abraded at some point. The idler spring may be loose, or the pulley partially binds at some spot. Check that it rolls freely and hasn't got much axial play.

Do I need to tear apart everything to get to this?  What is the best way to attack this issue?

Thanks

Wayne

Just remove the front panel, two screws at the very bottom. Get some eyeballs on the belt. Run it with the front panel off and see if you can tell from whence the noise doth emanateth. See-eth?

I did that last night.  It appears to be coming from the idler assembly.  But it is behind the motor.  So I was not sure if I need to tear apart everything from top down or is there an easier way of getting to it.

It looks like the idler moves so much that it almost touches the large wheel attached to the transmission.  Not sure if that is normal movement or the cause of the noise?

Sounds like the belt blew a chunk, as Sublime Master Keino suggested. Apply more eyeball action.
