If the washer fills, and the motor runs and it pumps out ok, you have just broken the coupler between the motor and the transmission. Is designed to do this if the washer is overloaded or the transmision hangs up. Or it just gets tired and decides to break for the fun of it.  Look under your washer for black rubber fray and perhaps white pieces of plastic.
