Hey guys:

I love this forum.
It has saved me ton of money..
and I love to work on stuff and learn..

Well I have older carrier unit,, 1993ish.
I posted a few months and was given help on replacing the start cap, which I did and the unit has worked great.

The current problem is a humming noise.
The fan blower goes on the unit never fires up.

I took the cover off and used a tube and one of the relay boxes is humming, it sounds like it is trying to connect but can not..

I took a picture and labeled which one was making noise..

Is this hard to replace?
Do I need to replace it?
Were does the common man, non HVAC tech get parts?

Thanks so much..

Paul

Check the low voltage to the coil. These will usually come from the transformer. 24V. is what you need

I have a real Novice question:

What color would that wire be that I need to test?

Where is the coil / Transformer?

Is it right in front of my eyes and I am not seeing it!!!  :)

dont do anything if you are just hearing a noise . this is the reversing valve relay . it might make a noise as it gets older , this is normal .  are you getting cold air when you should be getting heat ? if i understand your post somethings not turning on ?  the relays shown have nothing to do with something not turning on , only if the system will blow heat or ac WHEN TURNED ON AND RUNNING

Thanks for replying...

' are you getting cold air when you should be getting heat ? if i understand your post somethings not turning on ? '

Yes getting Cold air when heat should be on...

Any ideas what it could be?

The only noise i hear is from that relay I pointed to in my picture... It just humms, maybe sounds more like clicking...

What can I do to help us figure this out???

Thanks

Are you sure it's the relay that you hear buzzing????

The low voltage transformer is right below that relay and sometimes transformers will buzz, (make sure it is mounted tight to the casing so that it can't vibrate).

Here is the picture of the unit..
The label is very very worn on the side of the unit..
I will go back out and really take a close look at it with a magnifying glass (Old Eyes!!)

OH,its a gas pack ! open mouth insert foot , RESET BRAIN ............ok i feel better now . well nothing changes , except just about everthing i typed above .... i still dont think that relay is bad ......you will need to remove the big cover just to the right of the one you removed , take a photo of whats in there . then while you are sitting right in front of it have someone turn on the heat , WHAT DO YOU SEE AND HEAR , include all clicks, motors starting, things glowing , things sparking, ect and post back

Cactus Bob:

Ok

Burrrrrr!! cold out there,,, Thank goodness for Gas logs!! and the up stairs heater is working...

Back to the task at hand:

I took the cover off.

Stood out there.

Had the wife turn the t-stat on.

It did the humming, clicking noise, from that piece shown on the first picture, for about 20 seconds.

Then the blower fan went on..

that was it for about 5 minutes.

Then I turned the t-stat off..

I hope that is the info you are looking for?

Thanks a whole lot..

Paul

The part "humming" is a relay (90-360) but I can't make out the print in the wiring diagram you posted. It looks like one of the wire colors is the same as that on the combustion blower (Located lower right in the burner compartment)

IF this is in fact the relay that controls the combustion motor you can jumper the top two wires (terminals 2 & 4) and the motor should run. If you can post a close up of the wiring diagram(maybe post the top & bottom separately) we can step you through some exact places to check for power.

PAUL , sorry i was away today . it looks like your in good hands . that wireing photo is bad, cannot make out what goes where . jumping out the relay is a good idea . dont forget to power down the unit first , them jump , set thermostat for heat , then power on ...... you might want to just see if the little draft motor will turn with a little screwdriver ....
