I just bought my house (built in 94) back in May, so Im not sure exactly what type of unit I have, and the serial and model numbers have faded on the sticker on the unit outside. I was told by the inspector that it was old, but a good one because of the type of motor. It has always worked fine, no problems, even after the hurricane (live in Houston). This morning its been kicking on and off with no problems, but just recently it started having this really loud hum to it...sounds kind of like when you rub your finger in circles along the ridge on top of a crystal wine glass, but obviously a lot louder. Loud inside, and loud outside. I am a first time home owner, so I know nothing about these things. Any help would be appreciative.

Sounds like an airflow issue of some sort.
First thing you should do is check the air filter.
