OK so it's still warm enough in the Hudson Valley, trees not yet turning so I want to be ahead of the curve. What is the procedure for changing the fuel filter (not the air filter I know how to do that) on an oil furnace.

Fuel filter should be located on the section of tubing coming out of the tank. Shut off the fuel from the tank-- there should be a hand shutoff between the tank and filter canister. The unscrew the filter housing and replace the filter. Housing will either screw off or is held in place with a single bolt on top. All that's the easy part. Then you graduate to the still-easy-but-more-involved part: purging air from the fuel line. See this page for details.
