I have a Yellow Flame Gas Log by Rasmussen, Model # 24 R/S
Serial number 10209, Natural Gas , 70,000 BTU.

I can turn it on and the pilot stays lit but when I flip the switch to turn it on nothing happens.

Should I start with the thermocouple?  if so which part , it looks like it has awire that bolts into the end of a coupling that holds it in place with a black graphite looking rod sticking out on the other side.

Any help is appreciated.

I can't find your model on the Rasmussen site but it sounds like you have one with a powerpile/thermopile instead of a thermocouple.

I would start by cleaning the pilot assembly. This type of system generates millivotage in the range of 500-750 millivolts DC to operate the valve. A clean strong pilot is necessary to generate the temperature necessary at the tip of the powerpile for the device to work as designed.

If you have a volt-meter capable of measuring DC volts below 1 VDC and maybe a picture of the valve wiring, we can walk you thru some simple tests.

Here are is a picture, I have a Greenlee dm-50 looks like it could measure in that range.   .000 in the 2 volt range.

Yes it is a thermopile (my bad) right now it has a whitish gray area on it where the pilot hits it. The pilot is set to hit in on the bottom of the blue flame. Do I need to adjust it so it hits more in the tip of the blue part of the pilot flame?

that's officially OLD...anyways, starting from the left lets call the terminals 1-4

switch OFF -  measure 1-2

switch ON - measure 1-2 then 3-4

Post your results. I'll work on finding a picture of how the pilot flame should look in relation to the thermopile.

And here it is...

THanks for your help, I adjusted the pilot so it hits the thermopile as shown and that seems to have been the problem.  It lights consistently now.
