not sure if that is correct model number, have a few other numbers

Carrier 58WAV091-14

J9409

36T01B3 42185

L170-40FHH127A176

one of those should be a part number i wrote down off the part last year, its what i think to be a thermal fuse basically dead center of the unit

friend called in a panic and asked if i'd look cause his pipes were about to freeze and he had no money(but he had a fridge full of beer) :P  so i went and found said defective part and bypassed it on his promiss to buy/replace ASAP, well its winter again and he wants to know where to buy it online

btw... what would cause this part to fail

Your limit switch opens up at  170F  (L170-40FHH127A176)  You can pull out the old one and see how long it is (ie. 3" or 7") and  use a generic that opens up at 170F.

You can browse through all the results off of this page that may help out:
http://furnaceparts.com/eshop/10Browse.asp

As for why it went bad, several options would be:
1. sheer age due beign heated and cooled so many times over the years
2. Actual over temp situation that damaged the device
3. Actual over temp situation and device designed to be a one shot device

Hope this helps some.

Apparently ya'll drank all the beer,  which was probably cooling the house down too much anyway and ya'll forgot about replacing the jumper wire with a fuse. Now! a year later he wants a real fuse? How much beer is he going to to store up this time?
Put the next larger fuse available back in there.
