I bought a house five years ago which came with a sub zero 550, made in 1997. What a lemon! The evaporator failed, then the freezer thermometer, now the refigeration compressor. In my area, the going rate for a compressor replacement is $1500. I've decided not to keep nursing the sub zero along and will bite the bullet to toss it in favor of a GE. I can't understand why the going repair rates are so high; the compressor itself only costs $300+

Never had single problem in 16 years. But, refrig area no longer cools. Appliance store repair service rep (from where we purchased) said flakes have developed in the sealed portion of refrig. Although plenty of coolant, after a few minutes of circulating, loose particles float around and settle, causing clog and no ability to cool. Only charged $65 for service call. Said it could not be repaired.

Flakes, huh? Well worth $65 for such an amazing work of fiction. Sounds like you got a tech who was too lazy to go back out to the truck to get a couple Bullets/A-1's and his r12 gauge set and see what was really going on. If there truly is a blockage in the ref system it can be solved by replacing the comp, evap and heat exchanger, a big job. As to your amputation strategy, I can't see how the job could possibly be done neatly. The freezer comp and condenser are located on top of the ref.

Apparently the part looks like this:![]() and probably this IS it. It costs some $30 at RCC... perhaps $50 in his shop. he charged about $650 for the labor? As it regards the breaker... it can cost something like that to have a new one wired in, but then, if it is a double breaker 2x120V, 20A, then it is probably for a dryer or range circuit... I believe your fridge should be on its own 1x120V circuit, or it is sharing such a circuit withe something else. The breaker on another circuit than your fridge, should not interfere with the comp relay or vice versa.

Daym, quite a lot for a hard start kit and labor, seems like should be less than $200.00 and that is not even what should be on there, is not an OEM part...not sure I would call this dude back at his rates....looks to be ripping you off in my opinion...

Daym, only another 1200.00 on top of the 650.....could buy a new frig, after getting a refund for most of the first charge to put a hard start kit on this compressor to begin with...cannot believe you had him come back after over charging you by about 500.00

Wow. We have a guy in my area who charges like this hack. Doesn't know his stuff too well, either. I certainly wouldn't trust him to properly install a compressor anyway. I get a lot of business from him. Totally bad karma to have a repair done intending not to pay for it, two wrongs do not make a right.

You began this saga with all of us supporting you and you would have had the full resources of this site to help you-- I love routing out vermin in the trade because they give us good guys a bad name. But I can no more condone what you're planning to do than I can what Shylock did. As far as I'm concerned, you're both morally defective pickpockets and you deserve each other. In fact, you could argue that he stands on the higher ground-- albeit both of you are on slimy ground-- because he told you up front how he was going to shaft you and you agreed to it! There are no winners in a race to the bottom. I judged you based on your own words, Slick. I call it like I see it and I know you by the words you wrote. Awww, did you get your wittle feewings huwrt? Well, try not being such a sleazebag. It's defective customers like you that make our lives as honest techs miserable. And it doesn't matter what other legal problems you have going on-- nothing justifies contracting with someone and then stiffing them. You're in the wrong place to talk about that, pal. Hit the road, you're not welcome here any longer.
