GE side by side refrigerator
Model #: gsh25kgmb bb

Ok...heres my problem. Bought this house like a year ago, has this fairly new fridge in here (approx 4-5 years old). Back in January we noticed problem that it wont shut off. The back of the freezer panel actually frosts up and the food doesnt stay cold.

Call Sears out, they come out and replace the board which costs me like $400. Works fine for about 2 months. Then same problem starts in beginning of April. Call them back and since its under 90 warranty still, its covered. They replaced another part (cant remember what cuz I wasnt home for that one.) Works fine until sometime in May. Same problem, wont stop running, freezes up in the back of the freezer and food gets warm.

They come back out June 1st and replace more parts, this time they charge me again even tho its the same problem. I wasnt a happy camper, they just seem to keep changing parts hoping the problem gets fixed. Well, last week, it starts again and they're coming out again this Thursday.

Anybody have any suggestions on what possibly could be the problem? Getting extremely frustrated with Sears and almost contemplating asking for my money back and getting someone else.

Thanks!

Edited to add: Talked to the people we bought house from. He said about year and half ago he replaced the t-stat himself. Said he couldnt find the exact replacement so he found one close and put that in. Could that have anything to do with it?

Your model number is currently included in a National Class Action lawsuit.  Based on your estimate of it's age, I would bet that it was made in 2001 or 2002.  Your serial number will confirm the year of manufacture.  If the second letter in your serial number is an "A" or "D", then your unit is absolutely defective and is included in this Class Action. The deadlines for registering for the benefits of the Settlement Agreement have been extended until Sept. 4th, 2006.  This means that you have to submit your claim forms promptly.  You can download and print these forms from our website http://www.BringGoodThingsToLife.org, or you can call the GE Class Action Moisture Settlement office at 1-866-839-4463 and have the forms sent.  You may schedule a repair at this number also.  The benefits you are entitled to are: refunds for previously paid repairs, refunds to anyone who already replaced their defective refrigerator at their own expense, a free one year extended warranty for "moisture related" repairs, and a free replacement refrigerator for anyone who has already had three moisture related repairs and problems continue. GE is doing everything they can to keep this information hidden from the country while they try to slip this Settlement Agreement though before too many people find out about it.  Once the final court approval occurs, everyone who did not get in on it and register will be forever barred from filing any type of claim for damages or losses.  I ask that anyone who reads this - please help to spread the word!   All information is available on our website. Finally, we know that the defects are not limited to just the 304 models currently listed.  We want to hear from people who have the same symptoms and problems with their GE refrigerator and were not included in this Class Action.

Look at you bills and see if they replaced the evp thermister in the freezer this thermister may be defective and is telling the mother board to terminate the defrost cycle prmaturely, this way leaving frost on the coils and building up

Heres a quick rundown on my repair history that Sears faxed me.

Jan 24, 06 - First time they came out. Replaced control board. Cost me 400. Not sure of date that I called them, report doesnt say.

April 12, 06 - called to Sears same problem

April 19, 06 - Sears came out and replaced thermisistor and damper, charged about 150.

May 26, 06 - called to Sears with same problem, guy came out and said he knew what it was, they'd fix it, no charge.

June 1, 06 - Sears came out. Replaced heater, thermostat, and sensor. I said no way am I paying this time (especially since guy who came out few days earlier said no charge). But this different guy came out and refused to do anything unless I paid like 200 for this repair. I was late for a flight, and argued for awhile with him, finally agreeing to pay 75 just for parts.

June 29, 06 - Called Sears again, same problem

July 6, 06 - Had schedule Sears appt again, but cancelled when found out about my fridge model problems. Called GE direct this time and have tech scheduled to come out 7/10/06, so we'll see where this one goes.

I would say for sure you have a defrost problem, however this is not what the GE moisture lawsuit is about, that was for ice inside of the freezer door due to not enough insulation in the doors...will have to see how this pans out...
