I have the Kemore Access Plus chest freezer model 183.13401.  It has a regular chest compartment on the top and a pull out drawer on the bottom.  I purchased it new Nov 03 from Sears.

The top compartment freezes well and I have had no problems.  Regular frost buildup and I keep it medium full to full.  The drawer, however, won't even freeze bread.  I don't want to put things in there for the fact that they will spoil.  The label inside recommends using the drawer for ice cream, I think not.

It has one temperature control which is set at medium to high freezing.  The "Fast Freeze" option is tuned off.   What can cause the top to freeze and the bottom no too?

Thanks much!

Strange, have heard of these but not seen one...full model number is 183.13401300, looked it up on the sears site, do not recognize who made this by the part numbers  RF-0000-000   perhaps others will know who the source is for 183 and have a clue about the problem....have you called for warranty service on this unit???  That is what I would do since it is not working right and would not want to void the warranty by going into it...

Thanks for the speedy reply Pegi!  It is labeled Kenmore, but I know a lot of things are.

It is a spiffy set up as you don't have to do a deep waist bend to get at the things in the bottom of the compartment.  Too often things get "lost" on the bottom.

I joked when I bought it, I chose that one because of the 2 storage areas, my husband couldn't sneak up behind me and push me in, I wouldn't fit!

I was hesistant to call for service as I only paid $200 and it might be more than that to have a service call.  What do you think??

""I purchased it new Nov 03 from Sears.""'  I was assuming this should be under full warranty.  Was guessing this was Nov. 03, 2005, but I now see this is perhaps 2003???   So I might have mis-undrstood the purchase date...yes, might cost more than the price of the unit...what with the service call and labor...is sad this was not checked when in warranty..

There is a 5yr warranty on the compressor, the sealed system (refrigerant, evap and condenser)  I did buy in Nov 03, so it is under warranty for those things.

I would be thrilled if it were one of those, do you imagine it is?  The 1yr warranty is on "all other parts or adjustments"

I appreciate your help, I would like to use that drawer for more than decor ;)

This will all depend on if the labor is covered, usually is only one year, check you warranty for labor coverage??

Deffinitely a Haier "183.Haier"

See this page: CLICK HERE for a very clear and organized chart of who makes what for Sears.

Haier badged as Kenmore...Sears & Roebuck will be spinning in their graves at this very moment.

Yea, scary stuff.....however if it had the Haier name on it might be harder to get some one to work on it and get parts, no one here will touch Haier products..but with the Kenmore name on the unit, well Sears has to work on it and get parts...this might be good for the customers...:?

Wow, you make it sound like Haier is the kiss of death in the appliance world ...... The Sears fella came, didn't bat an eyelash when he saw the unit.  He showed where the frost builds up (not indicated at all in the owners manual).  Since this has the drawer the cooling coils are between the chest compartment and the drawer.  They cool up to the compartment, down to the drawer.  The drawer was not seating properly (and had probably been that way since I got it) so an incredible amount of frost was building on the coils.

Now that I have had an education on all kinds of frost and the flakes it makes, and where the darned coils are, plus he adjusted the door, it is looking good, but still not freezing bread solid.  Hmmmm.

I'm not a technician. Just in sales. Even so, we've seen so many problems with Haier that we refuse to sell their products. Avanti is another brand that we won't sell anymore after getting burned over and over. Implied warranty laws hurt when people insist on buying junk.
