It sounds like a dodgy drain pump.  These DW fill via time fill, if all the water doesnt pump out, it fills up for the next wash on top of the water from the old wash until it activates the overfill switch.

Remove the drain pump and check for restrictions/blockages, or the propellor in the pump feels loose and sloppy..

Remove the kick strip, then remove the 6 screws holding the service panel (you may need to spring the bottom of the side panels out to remove this).  The drain pump should be on the LH side, and should twist off, but you may need to remove the drain hose.
