All of a sudden, our icemaker stopped producing those oh so needed cubes for our favorite drinks. We have a GE Profile TFX24PRXAWW. I checked the on/off arm, it's down and in the normal location. Have had no ice for days. Water on door works. I've seen water flow into the icemaker. I unplugged the fridge, waited about :20 seconds and plugged it back in. I've loosened the three screws holding the unit in and have looked inside to see that some 1/2 baked cubes were in there. Actually saw it 1/2 eject them after that and I helped them get free. Next thing I know, water is filling into the maker and down to the floor cascading down the shelves. So, best i can tell, I've got electric, I've got water but I've got no cubes. The freezer seems normally cold so, does that mean the icemaker is just toast? Scott.

Is this the old rounded-cube maker (as opposed to the newer crescent-shaped cube maker)? If so, then it's toast. If not, do tell.

Crescent style (looks like 1/2 moon) I removed icemaker unit (3 screws, 1 plug) It seems to try & make cubes, but they start to come out of the mold/tray and just stick up in the unit. They also looked a little unbaked. I'm guessing the freezing element on the cubemaker is bad? How does the unit know to fill the tray with water? Does the icemaker signal that through the plug? Is it the revoloution of the cube eject arm that trips the water refill? Can I simply replace certain parts in the cube maker or, do I just toss it and start with a new one. The fridge is 10 years old. Scott.

Are the cubes hollow or solid? Are all 8 of the cubes being made? You may just be getting low pressure water to the icemaker. Incomplete fill will not fill the mold right, and the pieces will mess up the harvest cycles by stopping the stripper arm. Start by going to the saddle valve that connects to your home water line. Take it off, drill out the hole with a 1/8" drill bit, and put it back together. Make sure you don't block the hole with the rubber gasket. Clean out the icemaker( so no ice is left inside ) and let it run to see what happens. Nick

Thank you for that idea. I will hold onto it -- but I think I found the problem. Since the water was working and electric was working and I saw some cubes try to eject, it seemed that they just couldn't finish ejecting. I pulled the white cover. Guess what I found? the small toothed gear had somehow worked it's way to the end of the rod and was barely making contact with the other gear. Guessing one is the timer mech/motor and the other is the harvest arm. There was enough pressure to push the cubes a little -- explaining the 1/4 eject -- but then the unit would just stop or miss due to the extra cube pressure. Long story short, slid the white gear back in place and just watched my first cubes ski off the production line into the hopper. We're phoning the friends and neighbors with the good news. At 8 cubes per 1/2 hour, we'll be serving cocktails by about 2pm. See you there if it continues to work. Scott. Last edited on Sat Oct 8th, 2005 03:29 pm by IceLessInPA |

Scott, might want to push that time back a bit, takes about 2 hours for each freeze cycle to bring on this harvest of 8 cubes..... How fast the ice maker makes this ice depends on how cold your freezer is also.

Just go to plan B, have them all bring a bag of ice!! If that little gear on the ice maker motor breaks G.E. of course, tells you you have to buy the whole motor to get that gear, and they all break teeth off. However, I have the majic part number here for just the GEAR. Will save lots of $$$. Let me know if you ever need this part number....

good idea to also apply a small amount of good quality glue to the gear and shaft to make sure that it does not work back loose again
