Noticed things not as cold as they should be in the fridge when I came home today, and di some investigating, and read the FAQ's here, and here is what I have. A warm fridge, with apparently no cold air blowing in when it is running, but plenty cold in the freezer....everything still nice and frozen. Opened the door while it was "running" and felt like air moving in the freezer. One thing I noticed after reading the FAQ's is those copper tubes(evaporator?) on the freezer side have quite a bit of "fuzzy" ice on them. Don't know at what point it's too much, but it seemed like quite a bit to me. That evaporator looks like it's right in line with the hole that come through to the fridge, which I'm assuming is where cold air comes in. I could be wrong on that, just trying to give as much info as possible. Bottom line, cold air isn't coming into the fridge. Anyway, we're losing all the food in the fridge tonight, I'm pretty sure, so that sucks, and I'm hoping this is just the defrost timer or defrost thermostat. I have to get it up and running. Any help, or advice, or feedback of any kind greatly appreciated, as always! EDIT: Oh, and I read this too http://fixitnow.com/2005/06/field-notes-maytag-side-by-side.htm about airflow, and doesn't seem like it either. I didn't get cold air blowing into the fridge when opening the freezer, indicating the return air being blocked, like he described. Also, turning the refrigerator control all the way up doesn't change a thing, and that goes right to the thermostat?? I think. I noticed a long plastic rod that is just an extension of the knob basically, and it goes right into something that I'm assuming is the thermostat. Just more info. EDIT # 2: More "fuzzy" ice building up on evaporator, for whatever that's worth....just more info. Gotta sleep......all the food in the fridge is now ruined, so at this point, it sort of does't matter. Last edited on Mon Nov 8th, 2010 08:54 am by acillatem |

Here you go http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j161/metalliholic06/DSCF1352.jpg http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j161/metalliholic06/DSCF1350.jpg I might add that this ice buildup has gotten worse since I went to bed. It wasn't this much when I first posted, and obviously not a while before I posted, if that helps. And thanks in advance!

could be either, or the Defrost Heater some electrical tests could confirm ..

If it's pretty straightforward, I could troubleshoot it possibly before the repair guy gets here. I haven't had to call one in a long time, but this is a little different, as a fridge is pretty critical.

Measure the resistance of the defrost heater, just find the wires on each end of the heater and disconnect so you can get your meter probes on it. Measure the continuity of the defrost thermostat with it at freezer temps. Should be closed. If both of those check good, then replace the defrost timer-- it's bad by elimination.
