Thinking of FINALLY hooking up auto-water/ice but need to add external-mount water filter. Newer Coldspots seem to come w/bottom-mount water filter units. Is there any way to retrofit my old Coldspot with more current Coldspot water filtration?

Your best bet will be to install an in-line water filter in the water supply tubing behind the fridge. This one would do nicely...

Turn off the water, cut the plastic tubing using a razor so you get a nice round, clean cut. The tubing pushes into the filter, no tools required, filter has john guest fittings...
