I have a three year old fridge that I purchased a few months ago that is not working properly. The problem began with the freezer working properly and the fridge not cooling well when the temp went over 90. I purchased a condenser coil brush and cleaned the condenser coils. After I plugged it back in, the performance was a bit better, but not cold enough to safely keep food. It was then that I noticed water freezing in the bottom of the freezer. Shortly after, the freezer temperature started rising as well. I turned the fridge around planning on taking a pic after removing the protective coverings, but noted water marks that I should probably show you first. (Thus the included picture.) Also, there is leaking under the fridge itself that I found when I moved it. I hope that the explanation that I am giving is not too long winded; I'm trying to be thorough so I can figure out if I should repair or replace,(Toolbox at the ready as we speak) and what I should do next. Do the water marks give you any clues about the problems or should I post a pic with the backs off? Sensei and Senpai of the forum, please guide me! Sounds like you have two problems that probably aren't related: temperature control in the beer compartment and water (condensate) leakage from the freezer. Let's start with the water problem. Behind that square panel in your photo lives the condensate grommet wherein the melted frost from the evaporator doth flow. If it's plugged or otherwise compromised, it'll leak and that's what you're seeing. Remove the panel and have a look, maybe even post another photo. BTW, if you want to post lots of photos or bigger ones, you can use imageshack.us and then post the links here. As for the erratic temperatures, lets' start by checking the two fans: the evaporator fan in the freezer and the condenser fan, in the lower compartment shown in your photo, by the compressor. Make sure both are running strong and steady. Also, check both door gaskets for any gaps between the cabinet, tears or puckers. Check all the way around, including the corners.

The condenser fan is running. The freezer was also clearly getting air blown inside when I turned it back on, but I'm not sure how to get to the evaporator fan yet. Here are pics with the protective covers removed and video of the condenser fan running (if you care to see). Video: Pics:       I am noting some rusting in the freezer cabin, but I'm assuming this is because of the condensation issue. Okay, what would you like me to do next, sir?

The photo sizes are just right-- no problem there at all. Generally, anything less than 1024 px wide won't bump out the right margin and is fine. The video didn't come through, maybe you can post the link if it's something you think we should to see. Looks like more of the same condensate problem. See comments annotated below.

On the condensate drain picture that the Samuari so graciously pointed out you will also need to remove the piece that the tube is attached to. That's where your glog most likely will be (within the turns. The suction line leak area needs to be clean and permagum installed (if you can find it) or plumbers putty from any hardware store. The freezer wall will need to be removed as well to apply from the inside too. Did this unit sit up for a while before you purchased it?

Did this unit sit up for a while before you purchased it? I'm not sure, but I think that it it likely. When I picked up the unit, it was plugged in and running s that I could see that it was working. It was, however, it WAS in her garage and I am not sure how long it had been there.

was there any visible frost in the Freezer, or did you check it's temperature I just touch tested it at the time. The temp in the freezer stayed below freezing for the first couple of months I had it. From about the end of June (when the high temps started hitting) the fridge went downhill in performance. There wasn't any obvious frosting in the freezer before now, but I also didn't note the level of rust in there. (Actually, I'm sure that this level of rust was NOT in there at the time...  ) The fridge has gone from a little dot of rust here and there, to this: And the freezer inside top:  we also need temperatures of the freezer as well as the Frige section. Freezer is at 33, and the fridge is at 62. I have had it plugged in for about 2 1/2 hours. Going to have to unplug again so I can clear those pipes.

Okay... Cleaned some lovely bubbles of gunk out of the pipework (Mostly out of the squiggly part), put a ring of plumbers putty around the back ring, reassembled and plugged it back in. Will check for moisture and leaks shortly. Last edited on Thu Jul 29th, 2010 03:24 am by Goddess |

How long has it been unplugged before this 2 & 1/2 hour stretch? Leave it plugged in over night and post the temps. again.

I figured that temp readings in the morning would be needed. Fridge and freezer are set at levels 5 and C respectively and I will leave them there overnight unless instructed to do differently. I've had it unplugged for about a week and a half while researching fixes (and then finding your site). See? It's all your fault for not popping up on my computer sooner!

Oh don't you worry one little bit, we will get to the bottom of it. It may take a few days to get it all figured out. do not unplug or remove the thermometers unless we tell you to. the controls are set fine.

Worrying is a waste of energy. Once I decide that something is getting done, it is getting done and that's it! The freezer was a happy 22 degrees this morning. The Fridge was at 40 degrees when a first opened it and then at 50 when checked it half an hour later (2 minutes ago)

I will leave the freezer be until late evening- 9 or 10ish- and recheck the temp then. (That will be 24 hours from being plugged back in.) I'll report the temps again at that point.

When I got home, the freezer was 28 degrees and the fridge was 60... (My daughter said that she had opened them and touch-checked them sometime this afternoon out of curiosity, if the disturbance makes a difference.) The temperature is not dropping.

her disturbance didn't hurt anything. It sure does sound like you have a sealed system problem i"ll post you some tear down instructions in a moment to verify the tragedy.
