I have a Jenn-air model # JCD2389GES that has a problem cooling. My wife called Jenn-air and they sent someone out who said I needed the compressor replaced and it would be 1,000 dollars. After he left I unplugged it overnight and when I plugged it back in it was working again! Unfortunately it quit working a week later. After researching I learned about the adaptive defrost control problem and replaced it on Oct. 10th. Haven't had any problems until last night Nov. 20th. Took the rear panel off of the freezer section and used a hair dryer on it to remove the frost from the coils. The frost was mainly on the top of the coils and wasn't over the entire thing. Right after I did that I plugged it in and it started to cool again. There are a lot of posts on this with this fridge, but I'm not exactly an electrician and I'm not exactly sure what is what. I'm ready to do my due diligence and check the continuity (ok I can do that) on the defrost heater and defrost thermostat but I don't know where they are located. I've also read about a faulty relay but cannot find the post.
The fridge and freezer are now working, but the fridge hardly ever goes below 40 and I'm sure it wont last.

Could it be the defrost heater & thermostat assembly maybe? http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?PartID=1025806&PPStack=1

Thanks!
Jim

Thanks for your help. I've attached a pic I just took now. Unfortunately, I didn't take a pic of it last night before I put a hair dryer to it when the fridge was not working. All of the coils are cold and the freezer is working fine. The fridge is now about 37 degrees. One thing I should have mentioned is that I did not defrost the coils when I put the new adaptive defrost control in back in Oct. I assume it shouldn't matter, just puttin' it out there.

Thanks again.

Ok thanks-will do. I have the controls maxed out on the fridge, but doesn't seem to be much colder than 37-( which I'm happy to live with) I'll check again throughout the day-week-month... Sure hope I don't need a sealed system (keeping my fingers crossed) -if so I'll be getting a new fridge.

Freezer should be able to get 0F. If it's not, then make sure that both the evaporator and condenser fans are running and that condenser is clean. If they're both good, then need to check the frost pattern on the evaporator after the fridge has been running for a few hours. Post another pic as Reg suggested.

Freezer is below -10F with the thermometer I have and it is the lowest that thermometer will go. Should the fan constantly run above the evaporator? And is that the blue fan that I have in my pic above? Just want to be certain.
The condenser which I assume is in the rear of the fridge did turn on when I plugged it in. And the fan attached to it spun.

I currently don't feel airflow at the vents in the freezer and I don't feel airflow in the fridge part either. The temp in the fridge is 49. Ugh. Compressor is not running at the moment.

I guess I'll take another pic of the frost pattern.

Well, here's the pic. I assume this isn't good. Fan not spinning either. I'm gonna put a hairdryer to it again and hope I can at least save the food I have in there. Thanks for your help.

As I was putting the hairdryer to it I touched the heating element below and it had ice surrounding it. Could it be that it is not turning on at all?

Ok. Just one more thing. Just went to put stuff back in the freezer and I noticed that the fan wasn't turning. I gave it a quick push with my finger and it started spinning. Maybe it means nothing, I don't know. I truly hate Jenn-air.

That means your fan has an intermittent problem and sometimes, (probably most of the time), isn't running when it should be.

The -10 degrees in the freezer pretty much says the sealed system is ok,  If it wasn't it would never be able to get that cold.

That blue fan does have all four blades on it, doesn't it?????  It appears in the picture one of the blades maybe missing, (but probably just the angle of picture not showing one blade).

If the evaporator fan doesn't run when the compressor is running there is no way for the refrig section to get cold, (the fan is what moves the cold air from the freezer to the refrig).

This just in from the "Why didn't I catch this before" Department: those dinky evaporator fans are known trouble-makers. Bad for stopping intermittently and/or failing altogether. Replace it with this shaded pole fan motor.

Just checked the fan again and it wasn't turning when the compressor clicked on. Tapped the blade and it's spinnin'. I'm ordering the part today. Man, wont I be lucky if that's been my problem all along! That is, until I run into another one. Oh, and all four blades are there.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks again. Have the part, but it's missing one of the parts (part just left of the instructions on the pic thumbnails) as well as the instruction sheet. Any chance there is a PDF of the instructions?

Thanks,
Jim

The piece that I'm missing is attached along with the instructions. I'll check it all out tomorrow. If I can just swap it out fine, but I don't even know which is positive or neg. The fan motor in the box has 3 tabs. Included is a wire that is green ( assume ground) and a white connector that has two wires that are blue and white.

The fan I have currently (that I have to replace) has only two wires and that's it.

Sorry I know this should be (is) easy, but afraid of making a mistake. My electronic days of making tv jammers for my friends was soooo long ago.

Thanks to anyone to offer advise!

He ordered the part Samurai referred him to, not the OEM motor.

I don't think it's going to fit, or maybe Samurai knows the trick to make it work and can tell what needs to be done to make it fit.  The extra plastic bracket isn't going to mount in this Jenn-air refrig at all.

Personally, I don't think the part Samurai referred to replace is going to be able to work in this application.

The front mounting nose on the shaded pole motor adds an extra inch to how far the fan is mounted up, it also uses the hexagon mounting grommets that are way to big to fit in the smaller round holes/grommets the OEM motor uses.

Part Samurai recommended as a replacement:

OEM Part 61005339

Thanks- I see that I probably have the wrong part. It is the black motor. There are two numbers-

0RM-1037K1

&

W10128551 ZP

I assume I need that white motor right? I'll just put everything back in the box. I didn't try and install it yet anyway. Oh and I did have all the parts- didn't realize the fourth thumbnail was the same as the 3rd but just flipped upside-down. Duh!

Thanks again for your help, and have a great Thanksgiving!
Jim
