Spark Ignition Systems

Conventional

Oven models using a 'conventional' spark ignition system also have an actual gas pilot like a pilot ignition system but it is not lit all the time. Instead, when the oven thermostat is turned on, gas flows to the oven burner safety valve and also the oven's pilot which gets lit via a spark. Once the pilot is lit and the oven safety valve's sensor bulb senses it, that valve will then open to allow gas to flow to the oven burner where the pilot flame ignites the burner.

It Appears this is my setup. The safety valve does not get gas until the oven thermostat is turned on. This is not a fix but just a test to prove the oven thermostat does work. Yes my main gas valve is turned off. And yes, if the oven thermostat fails, with the safety valve open, gas would spew out into the oven burner.

Are you sure it regulates the temp correctly????

I'm pretty sure you are correct that on your style the oven t-stat in the OFF position shuts off the main gas going to the safety valve.

But I believe the main gas line is supplying gas to the safety valve anytime the t-stat is in any position besides off and the on/off cycle of the flame is controlled by the pilot secondary flame being turned on/off by the oven t-stat.

So when the oven gets to the set temp the secondary pilot flame should shut down so you only have a small pilot burning and not heating the safety valve sensor bulb and the burner shuts off, then when the oven cools down a bit and it calls for heat again the secondary pilot flame should be cycled back on and the safety valve opens.

With the safety valve blocked open like you have it you should only have two settings for the oven temp --- ON or OFF.

DON'T MESS WITH IT LIKE THIS, IT'S NOT WORTH THE PROBLEMS YOU COULD CAUSE YOURSELF!!!!!!!!

yes I believe this is correct. When the oven reached temp, I saw the oven burner flame getting smaller and smaller, then I saw the pilot flame get small. I believe the gas burner never did shut completely off because gas was still flowing somewhat. The burner remained lit with a very small flame. Then starting increasing again as it was calling for more heat.

OK All..thanks for your help...The gas safetty valve was at fault. I replaced it and all went well. I did fine out that the oven temp control does stop gas flow to the gas safety valve when in the off position. This cant be any worse than finding an oven pilot light that has not been lit for a year.
