:? My dishwasher does not fully drain. I changed the pump impeller. I timed the rinse and hold cycle for 20 minutes which is correct. If I run a second drain rinse and hold cycle the remaining water pumps out. I did notice a diapharm where the water drains. Should I replace this next?..is there to much water entering in the washer?..any suggestions?

First thing to do is remove the drain hose at the discharge end (not the dishwasher end... yet) and check for gookus in the port that it connects to, whether it's a disposal or a stand pipe, whatever.

Next, remove the drain hose at the d/w end, pucker up and blow like a fish. Should clear a slug of water and blow free, as free as the wind blows, as free as the grass grows, blow, blow free!

If all that checks out, you probably need to replace the pump impeller. Some help for that on this page.

I had already replaced the pump impeller. All hoses clear. I did find out that the drain hose use to be routed to the ptrap. Now it is going to the sink garbage disposal which is a little higher. Could this be a problem. As we all know, the customer says we had the problem before we made any changes. Any more suggestions?

the higher the better as far as the drain hose.your next test is to reconnect hose back to pump and fill diswasher up with water normally. get ya a bucket and drain the diswasher into the bucket...try to keep the hose as high as it normally would be if still connected to the disposal. Does it pump all the water out now ?

Don't worry about the air gap- your draining into a disposal so you've got a built-in air gap.

Are you serious Samurai, what you been drinking today!!!!!!

With a the dishwasher connected to a disposal, if you don't have at least a high drain loop, then you have a real good chance of having yuck water flowing back into dishwasher if the disposal gets plugged up.

I believe no matter where you have the drain connected you are required to have a high drain loop or air gap.

Unbunch thy panties, young William. The question, and my answer, were specifically about the air gap; the subject of the drain hose loop, while important, was not addressed in my answer. No need to create confusion where none need exist.

As for the air gap, yes, the disposal IS the air gap in case of draining directly to the disposal. Behold Figure 2:

Fig 1  is interesting ... it shows the DW Drain Hose into the Sink Drain, above the trap,
but mentions to "Remove knock-out plug in disposer"

ok...now my next question is...if my two basin sink is to the left of the dishwasher, and my disposer is in the left basin, does it matter if I still run the hose to the disposer. The pictures show the hose going to the  right side of the sink no matter where the disposer is.  All I know is that if I run a second rinse and Hold cycle, the water drains out. The original problem is that my customer could not get all the water to drain. The hose was originally connected to the ptrap which is in the right basin, next to the dishwasher. They had someone reconnect the drain hose to the disposer which is in the left basin, two basins over from the dishwasher. I rebuit the pump. hoses are clear. Could the original problem be fixed, and now a new problem exsist because of a new orientation of the drain hose? Also, does the diapharm in the outport of the pump have anything to do with the dishwasher not draining all the way?

By doing the text I instructed you are eliminating the dishwasher being the problem. As long as they didn't add any extra hose to the original drain hose the the length of the hose isn't a problem as well as hooking it to the disposal in comparrison to the ptrap. Do the test the check the diposal port , probably didn't remove all of the metal plug that "Regs" refered to

the port where the drain hose attaches. it is blocked with a metal plug from the factory and must be removed before installing dishwasher. a piece of the plug may still be in there, you may be able to stick a screwdriver in there and feel it

jon- where the drain hose connects is a white check valve. disconnect hose remove  check valve and check for blockage. what i usually see with these is the drain hose kinks just a little to stop complete drain. look for small kink.

I thought this was the "Point Voyager" type with the dinky wash motor. If this is the older style with the big honkin' wash motor, then that check valve is definitely a suspect. More on this here:

I am wondering if part #20 is at fault. A few years ago I had a problem with a G.E. d/w and it was gukus at #20 area. And not very much gukus either...Water is recirculating into the tub instead of going to drain. Have a look - I have been wrong before..............
