My refrigerator is a GE GTS22IBMBRWW. It will get cold, but it won’t stay cold. If I unplug it and let it sit for a few hours it will get cold again, but then it warms up again the next day. I am guessing that the refrigerator goes into defrost mode and then does not come out (and keep in mind I know very little about these things--basically everything I know comes from scouring these forums and the rest of the internet for the last couple of weeks-- I downloaded the user manual, but it was of very little use.). This is what I know: The evaporator fan works. I cleaned the condenser coils. If I plug the refrigerator in at 11:00 p.m. it will get cold enough that water in the freezer will be frozen when I go to work in the morning, but by the time I get home from work the ice will have melted (I have repeated this experiment several days now). If I leave it plugged in and turned on it will never get cold again after the initial chill. If I simply unplug the refrigerator and plug it back in it does not seem to get cold (I only did this experiment once--will try again when I get home tonight). If I unplug the refrigerator when I get home and wait a few hours to plug it back in it gets cold again. Over the weekend, while it was warm, I unplugged the refrigerator, opened up the back of the freezer and looked at the evaporator. There was no ice on the evaporator (or anywhere). It took me a few minutes to figure out how to take everything apart, so I suppose if there was ice it could have melted, but it wasn’t long (I can repeat this as well now that I know how everything comes apart). Can you give me any advice?

Is the Compressor running ? Does it run "forever" ? Check the Evaporator Coils again after the Compressor runs for about an hour or two. Does the Condenser Fan run when the Compressor is running ?

RegUS_PatOff wrote: Is the Compressor running ? Thanks for the service manual! The Condenser fan is running. I don't think the Compressor is running. I am not sure what it should sound like, but it isn't making any noise that I could hear, so I suspect that means no. I'll check the evaporator coils but I have to clean up a little bit of a mess first. I had a gallon bottle of water in the freezer section--to turn in to ice and let me know it was getting cold enough to freeze, and it sort of sprang a leak. So, there is water in the freezer compartment that I have to mop up before I can take anything apart.

OK. . . This is interesting. I didn't mop up the freezer right away because I had to cook dinner. I go back now, a few hours later, and the freezer is cold. Frozen. The water that I didn't mop up is frozen. The only difference that I can see is that I did open the bottom/back of the refrigerator so that I could see if the compressor/condenser fan was working. And, I didn't close it when I was finished checking (I had to make humus--and dinner waits for no man). What I find odd is that the refrigerator has been broken for well over a month, I have left it on for several days in the past, and it has never gotten cold again after the initial chill. I will leave it on tonight and see what it looks like in the morning.

Still frozen. Not sure why. . . unless ventilation could possibly be an issue? I'll read the service manual you sent me and see if that helps me better understand.

It is still cold. I am not ready to declare victory yet, but I think it is fixed or at least better. . . I have a theory (which incidentally illustrates how little I know). When I wrote in my original post that I had cleaned the condenser coils I was wrong. I read on another site that the condenser coils were either on the back or the bottom of the refrigerator. Mine were not on the back, so I decided they were on the bottom. I bought a brush, scrubbed where I thought they must be, vacuumed it up, and of course it made no difference because there was nothing underneath the refrigerator (but I didn't know that). Flash forward to yesterday when I opened the back of the refrigerator to check the compressor and the fan. I wasn't sure what was what, and the light wasn't great, so I brushed off the black, circle of tubes that it turns out is the no-clean condenser. It was dusty. My theory is that the dust on the condenser was causing the problem, and when I wiped it off to get a better look that cleaned enough dust off that it started working again.

glad all is well for now...more than likely there was something stopping the condensor fan from turning...did you verify that it was running?

appl.tech.29501 wrote: glad all is well for now...more than likely there was something stopping the condensor fan from turning...did you verify that it was running? I did verify that the fan was running. Apparently, however, my victory dance may have been pre-mature. When I woke up Sunday morning the refrigerator was really loud--I am not sure how to describe the sound--nothing alarming, but it sounded like it was working harder. This is the same sort of noise it made when it wasn't working before, and sure enough when I opened the freezer the ice-cube trays were almost completely melted. So, I unplugged it and opened the back wall of the freezer. I knew what I was doing this time (a little bit), so it only took a minute or two. There was no ice. . . in fact there were little drops of water on the evaporator. I opened the bottom and did a thorough job of dusting off the no-clean condenser, but I am starting to think that isn't the problem. It has been cold ever since (about a day), but I suspect there are still problems. Here is a wacky theory: I think I read in the service manual (or somewhere) that the system kept track of how often the doors were opened, and used that information when deciding when to go into defrost mode and for how long. Is it possible that by checking every couple of hours to see if it was still working I kept it from going into defrost mode until Sunday morning?

RegUS_PatOff wrote: RegUS_PatOff wrote:Is the Compressor running ? Thanks for the help guys! I know this seems like a basic question, but how can I tell if the compressor is running? It appears to be a sealed unit, so I couldn't see anything moving. I put my hand on it and didn't feel a vibration, and I put my ear next to it and didn't hear anything. But, the refrigerator does get cold, and it stayed cold from Wed night until Sunday morning. Would it get/stay cold without the compressor? Is there a method that a complete amateur (me) can use to check to see if the compressor is running?

I ordered the second meter on your list from Harbor--it should be here in a few days, but in the meantime I will try the listen and feel test again tonight.

Interesting. Just got home, and the refrigerator is still cold and the ice in the freezer is still frozen. When I checked the compressor it was clearly working. I could both hear it and feel a vibration. Now that I know what it feels like when it is working, I can say that when I checked it last week it the compressor was not running. The refrigerator was warm at the time. Edit: after I put the groceries away and water some plants, about 20 minutes, I came back and the compressor was not running. Does it cycle on and off? Edit: I have been in and out of the refrigerator several times (cooking dinner), but now the compressor is on again. Edit: A couple of hours later, and it is still cold, and the compressor is still running, but now it is hot. I put my hand on to test it and it is hot. Sounds like a wacky thermistor or intermittent realay....leaning towards the latter.
