I just purchased a 9 year old DCS RG 304. Everything works except the broiler. Below is what the seller told me. "My daughter was using the broiler to make toast, and left it on after the toast was done. When I got home later, the hard working broiler had warmed the house and made it a bit smokey. I turned it off and when I tried to turn it on again it did not work." The igniter is not coming on at all and I am hoping that all it needs is a new one. Could an igniter be damaged by the broiler being left on for an extended period with the oven door shut? Since I do not know when/if the oven ignitor was replaced I am thinking it makes sense to replace it also. I am new to stoves but I think that the ignitor has to draw a certain amperage before the gas valve opens. Reading here it seems that it is gets older this takes longer so the oven temperature swings more. Do I have this right? I don't have a meter to measure this but I am wondering roughly how long it should take for the gas to come on after you turn on the oven? Currently it takes about 58 seconds. Are there any cheaper alternatives for the ignitors or should I just order from Fisher & Paykel? Finally any advice on cleaning the oven? It looks like it has not been cleaned in a while I am especially unsure about how to clean the cover over the broiler. Thanks Rupert

Youre right, the igniter draws sufficient amperage to open the safety valve. Over time that amperage drops and the igniter must be replaced. Having an inexpensive Clamp Ammeter is a good idea. Your good amperage ought to be around 2.8 to 3.4 amps. We are authorized Fisher Paykel and DCS servicers and can get you the igniter that you need. Bob coastalappliances.com

Thanks Robert. I spoke to Fisher Paykel and their prices seemed reasonable Oven ignitor $45 Broiler ignitor $76 At this point I just need to decide if I should replace the oven ignitor. It is working so it is drawing sufficient amps to open the safety value. Do I need to worry about how long it takes to draw enough amps or is the failure mode just that it no longer draws enough amps to open the safety valve? Thanks Rupert

I ordered both ignitors from Fisher Paykel. Bob was spot on. With a the new ignitor the gas valve for the oven opens up in 35 seconds. I replaced the broiler ignitor but the broiler still did not light even though the gas valve now opened. I did some more reading here and decided to clean the orifice as well as the mesh which was covered in grease from years of non use. I cleaned the mesh by covering it with an ammonia soaked towel. I soaked the orifice in rubbing alcohol and then cleaned it with a cotton bud. The broiler now works perfectly. After applying some elbow grease this 9 year old range looks great ![]() Thanks Rupert Last edited on Wed Nov 18th, 2009 03:50 pm by rupes |
