ok, let's just say for the sake of argument, that I wanted to use a 3 in 1 or one of the other generic relay on an old piece of crap fridge out in the garage. How do I determine which one to use? I'm not sure how to determine the horsepower.

I mean how do I determine the horsepower on any compressor. I am just wondering, in a worse case scenario, on ancient "beer and bait" refrigerators, how to determine horsepower if I wanted to use a generic start device.

The average household refrigerator has a 1/4hp compressor. Post your model number and we can look that up. Be aware that using a 3 in 1 such as RCO410 will void your manufacturer's warranty, if the compressor is still under warranty.
