Lovely new fridge has been making intermittent loud buzzing noise, like a sticking solenoid, for a couple months. It worked fine, but would buzz for 10 secs, repeatedly, for a few minutes each time. It quit working once a while ago, then twice more, recently; digital display went to dashes and beer got warm. Cycling power fixed it each time. Today, fridge and freezer are above setpoint temp, but operating, buzzing in the usual manner. Fridge is 44 degrees, freezer is just above freezing point. *UPDATE* Took the back off the fridge.... the noise is definitely coming from the compressor as it tries to start. I'm thinking this isn't one I can fix with a crescent wrench and a stick of gum. Last edited on Sun Oct 25th, 2009 10:21 pm by moelco |

Did it sound like the video in this post? If so, then that post also has the wisdom you seek. Grok this new wisdom and resolve to only use it for good.

I think it has become clear. I solemnly swear I will not say the words, "I told you so" to my dearly beloved.

hmmmm....if a guy's crack is showing, you call him a repairman, but when it's a gal, well, ummmm, not sure I'd like what they'd call me.... Thanks for the wisdom; may you always bask in the glow of the 40w clear lamp. I ordered the part, but think the compressor has entered a new plane of existence. We shall see.

I plugged in the fridge with the new relay installed, and it made the same noise. The fan starts and runs quietly. The fridge didn't cool at all in 20 minutes that I let it run, and the top half of the compressor got warm to the touch, but not hot. The noise sounds like it's coming from the compressor, occurs every 2-3 minutes, and lasts 15 seconds. I put a meter on the compressor stabs before putting the new relay in, and the readings were 4, 5, and 10 ohms. The fridge draws 9 amps while it's buzzing, nearly nothing in between. I think the compressor is dead. Any other thoughts? Cost estimate to replace (I'm not set up to do the job)?

For what it's worth (namely, $718.75), some Kenmore fridges are sold with a 5-year "sealed system" warranty, meaning that they send a fellow over to put the new compressor in free-o'-charge. The catch is that you have to tell them about it, repeatedly and with conviction. Beer is cold, wallet is unscathed, life is good.
