Hi samuraii,

The wife has decreed that our new fridge will be a french door/bottom freezer.  And of course, our tastes dwarf our budget.  So the solution?  Scratch-n-Dent!

So we hit a rather large showroom last week.  Pretty good selection of units that would meet our needs, all at pretty good prices (50-60% of showroom-new prices).

But I hesitated to pull the trigger.  Why?  it seems like every single french-door model in there had problems with the fridge door alignment.  Usually, left and right where a little too close together, so it took a little push-n-rub to get the second door closed.

So my question is, does that seem like a big issue to iron out?  I imagine the answer is "it depends", but does anybody have any words of wisdom?  Are there different possible causes for this, some more easily fixable than others- anything I can look for in the store?  Brands are varied, but it's a Sears, so basically Kenmore, which is GE or Westinghouse or Maytag I believe.  Any red flags I need to look for which should cause me to run away?

Also, the chosen color is "black".  Neither side will be exposed, so best case scenario is that we find one with its scratches and dents on the sides.  But if they're on the front, what is the degree of difficulty for scratch repair?  Any difference with different texture cabinets (i.e. glossy vs. textured?)  Do most mfgs sell touch-up paint that I can apply and buff smooth, or does that only work on cars?

Thanks all!

Thanks. Based on your approval we now have a brand spanking new LG (Kenmore) french-door fridge at 50% of retail! Dents are rarely noticable, too, due to placement. Didn't have enough shims to get the door perfectly level, but I'll try to pick up some more....

thanks again!

Oh, forgot- it's a 795.7874.

My fridge doors close fine, my biggest complaint is that the freezer door doesn't always shut quite all the way. Not only that, often it closes enough to turn the fan on (and not set off the alarm) but it's still open just a crack. The result...most of the stuff in the freezer is usually covered in frost and occasionally the stuff near the door is pretty soft. I've gotten in the habit of giving the door a push whenever I'm near it.

I think it's normally just one side or the other, sometimes all around. I think it's a combo of a poor design and user error.
