My Sub-Zero 642 makes a rather loud groaning noise when on, I believe, the cooling cycle. When I open the freezer door, the noise stops but coninues when the door closes. The unit holds temperature on both freezer and fridge side. My concern is the noise is indicative of something about to fail. However, the noise has been ongoing for over a year now. The noise drives me buggy sometimes so I prefer to just get it fixed. Any idea of the cause? What is the approximate cost to replace? Thank you, Randy

Sounds like the evaperator fan motor if it stops when opening the door, hold the light/door/fan/switch in with the door open if possible and see if it could be the fan motor bearings making the noise...

I think you are correct the evaperator fan motor needs to be replaced. How difficult is the fan to replace? I'm pretty handy, but gaining access to mounting of the various brackets and once I have the old motor out, how easy it is to take the fan off the old shaft. I'm assuming I get at the motor from the top access panel. Thank you

Not a difficult job at all, you will need to remove the upper shelves and the "L" shaped rear panel/evap cover. The fan assembly pulls out and the blade is plastic and will slide rigth off at room temp. The kit comes with instructions for many different models, just follow the path for your unit.

I finally got the chance to pull of the L-shaped panel. I can see the fan motor and the fan blads hidden behind the coil. It appears to me the only way I can get at the fan mounting brackets is remove the screws holding the coil to the back wall of the freezer. Then I may have room to get at the fan. Is this what I want to do? Thank you!!

No, the fan assembly cartridge comes up as a unit, it just lifts up.
