Hi,

Need help fixing my fridge.  Symptoms:  Temps fluctuate all over the place. Fridge temps 40 to 47deg, freezer 0 -7 deg.

So far I have replaced the main board with WR49X10152, two temp sensors in freezer, evap DC fan motor, theromstat defroster on evap coil.  The evap coil had was iced up.

I meant' to replace the sensor in the fridge, but did not order enough parts.  I plan to do that next.  I did take the sensors that I took out of the freezer and tried them in the fridge.  No luck.  All these sensors have the same part number WR55X10025.

This is the third main board in the fridge since new, including the original.  GE replaced it the first time.  All fans and damper doors appear to be working and the door seals seem to be in good shape and tight.

Need advice on what needs to be replaced to fix this annnoying problem.  Also a service manual download would be nice.

Thanks

I ran the diagnostics and when I enter codes (0,6)it fails. If I have the right diagnostic chart this is for the communication check between the temp control and dispenser.

What this mean, main board?

is the condensor clean? you need to diagnose the unit when the temps are warm. make sure the compressor and all the fans are running. if so you need to remove both evap covers and inspect the frost pattern. can you be more specific on which thermistors you replaced? you need to ohm out the evaperator thermistor in the fridge side first as i have a hunch that is where your problem is stemming from.

The refrigerator is two years old.  The condenser is clean. I have already removed both evaporator covers and both were iced up (frosty) not clear.

The frig side evap metal trough is rusting out.  I have a new one on order.

What should the frig side thermistor resistance read and at what temp? Today when I was tearing into it I noticed another thermistor on the fridge evap in the back and it was frozen solid. There are two thermistors in the frig and two in the freezer.

I have replaced the two thermistors in the freezer side and in addition I replaced the thermostat for the defroster and the fan. Shotgunning it.

All fans door ducts work and compressor works.  Freezer get real cold.  Frig don't.
What is the deal with fail diagnostics for communication between temp control and dispenser?

Thanks for your help I have been trying to get this working for two weeks now.

the pinouts might be different on your board but the resistance values are the same. if the refrigerator side evap thermistor is frozen the control should be diverting refrigerant to the freezer or the compressor should be off. definitely make sure it tests good, its prone to failure because it constantly gets wet.

How much frost? next time its acting up snap a photo of the evap.

i cant comment on the failed diagnostics. when these fridges first came out i read what the diagnostic modes do and i decided i can test all the components myself and get more accurate results in less time so i have never bothered with them. I doubt the code is related to your problem and i wouldnt put too much stock in it.

the freshfood evaporator fan is embedded in the styrofoam cover that sits over the freshfood evaporator behind the plastic cover...not the chiller fan. ge's diagram in that area only shows the chiller fan. have you checked visually that the FF evap fan is running ? if not that would explain icing over of your evaporator and high temps in the FF. the fan does not come seperate, only as an assembly with the styrofoam block. i had a few of those fans fail. this is the part number i believe WR17X11844.

Yup I seen that fan in tucked away in the styrofoam. It works. Looks kind of like fan used in a computor case.

I tried to get the custom cool assembly out to visually inspect the damper. Removed the screws and clips, but I could not get it out w/o breaking it. There is a evap heater in there and I wonder if it is bad.

Drawings of my frig and freezer section are available at the following link. Found it while researching this POS GE refrigerator.

Think I'll order the two temp sensors for the frig and give that a shot. Right now we are pretty much working out of our camper reefer.

Does anyone know what the GE part number is for the thermistor that goes on the back of the frig evap?  It has a 90deg turn in it and it designed to fit into a metal heatsink that is zipped tied to the evap core.  MY drawing does not show it and it  might come with the next higher assembly.

General question about replacing the temp sensors. Do you guys used crimp connectors or solder and heat shrink wrap. I have been using the solder and heat shrink method.

Right now the refrigerator temp display shows 46deg and the thermo I put in ther reads 40deg.  The freezer is at -3deg.  The frig is colder now cuase I moved the evap thermist to the front o fthe coil were it is warmer.

hmm are you sure the thermistor is different? i dont see it on the diagram either. If it is different would it be possible to make one of the other thermistors fit? I prefer to solder and heat shrink my connections.

Yeah it's different, has a 90deg turn, but the overall diameter of the sensor is the same. The standard GE temp sensor should fit the heatsink.

Should I just order another temp sensor and use that?

i dont have a manual for this model so im not sure if its specs are the same. i assume it has the same values as the other thermistors. i suspect that the evaperator components on these things are manufactured by samsung so maybe its a thermistor built to their specs.

Well I just order the same sensor used in the rest of the box. See if it works.
