Hello. I have a 2007 Kenmore side by side refrigerator model 106.57032602.
In early August I noticed that the refrigerator began making a clicking, then a humming, restarting or recycling noise that runs for about 4 seconds, stops, and begins again for about 4 seconds.

It did this repeating, clicking noise for about a two minutes and then stopped. It did this a few times a day. The fridge then stopped cooling. The clicking noise was coming from the top inside part of the refrig near the temperature controls.

I ordered a new adaptive defrost control device and installed it in mid August. That didn't immediately make a difference until I realized that I had an ice buildup in the freezer coils. I defrosted the coils and then everything was fine.
Two days ago the click, hum cycle started again from the adaptive defrost control device area (after working perfectly for several weeks now.)

There is also an ice buildup again on the freezer coils and I removed this ice earlier today. I guess that it is not defrosting properly.

Since removing the ice, I have not had the click/hum problem. Could the new adc device be faulty? I am obviously an amateur with refrigerators, but I wouldn't think it's the compressor since the click/hum is coming from the adc area.

This whole problem is getting real old and frustrating. Any ideas?
Thanks.

one of these may be your wiring diagram

I like to do home repairs, but know very little about electrical matters or wiring diagrams.
Any other thoughts about the problem?
I suspect that the refrigerator will run fine for several weeks, then the freezer coils will ice up and I'll get the click/hum noise from the ADC again.

Sounds like possible compressor start relay problem. Read this and then take a peek.

This clicking/humming noise comes from the ADC area on the top right of the refrig and it only happens when the freezer coils are iced up.
Thanks for your help. I'll check the compressor start relay by shaking it. Is it located at the bottom right of the back of the refrig behind the panel that must be removed? If it is there, that's not where the sound is coming from.
Thanks.

Likely what you are hearing is the sound of the motorized damper motor operating when it responds to temperature change, some of them can make a fair amount of sound. It does not indicate a failure, but if the sound annoys you, the damper motor ass'y can be easily replaced
