The dishwasher runs for several hours and then the dishes are really wet and not very clean. I tried to follow the diagnostic procedure but it also took forever.

Sounds as if the heating circuit may have malfunctioned. If you have an amprobe, check the current through the large red wire that is accessible from the area behind the lower kickplate. An absence of current will verify this prognosis - the controller units in these frequently fail and cause this issue

Easy to confirm with the current draw test that Sublime Master kdog described. Can also to it at the L1 (black) wire in the junction box. Looking for around 11 amps if the heater's working, about 1.5 amps if'n it ain't. Also, see this page.

I have been away from the forum but my dw is still malfunctioning. If I am not an appliance person and I don't know any, where can I get an amprobe to check if the heater is working?

Ok, We have the kick plate off the dishwasher. What are we looking for? The black wire coming out of the junction box? Where is the red wire? Do we have to take off more than the kickplate?
