Top freezer, 4 years old.  Bought on craigslist and seller insists it was fine.  Mint condition, like he didn't even use it.  Transported on left side (when standing in front), not plugged in for 36 hours, maybe a mistake?  Cleaned coils with coil brush and vac (they were not bad at all).  Freezer and fridge controls both midpoint (recommended).  Compressor cycles on and off.  Freezer holds steady zero to -2.  Fridge 65.  Do not feel air coming into fridge.  Little bit of water on rear of top shelf under that gizmo that the temp control is part of - runs front to back at very top of fridge section.  Increasing fridge setting does not help, freezer went to +8, then settled back at about zero.   After start-up fridge hit 45 that I saw and seemed to slowly degrade (did not watch it closely).

Given the state of the freezer and that compressor cycles, I gotta think compressor and refrigerant are ok.  So what do I disassemble and what do I check?  Also, do I have to worry about any capacitor getting me when fooling with wires?

FRT21IL5DQ8 Wiring Diagram

The Compressor, Condenser Fan, and the Evaporator Fan, should all run at the same time.

They are controlled by the ADC Board which senses the Cold Control in the Fridge side.

How long did it sit up-right before plugging in ?

How long has it been plugged-in ?

Does the Fridge Light go OFF when closing the Door ?

It was upright for at least 36 hours

It was about 3 weeks ago that it was plugged in, maybe 4 weeks

I am 99% sure the light goes off (I'm not anywhere near it and will not be for a while) whne you press the door switch.

did the Fridge side ever cool good in the last 3 weeks ?

remove the Evaporator Cover and take a look at the frost pattern or clogged ?

check to see if both Fans are running when the Compressor runs

There is a good chance that the evaporator fan, (the one inside the freezer compartment), that moves air into the refrig compartment isn't working.

It may just need to be taken apart/cleaned up/oiled and reassembled.  It very common to see small amounts of rust formed on the evaporator fan rotor causing it not to be able to start up.

I see this in rentals alot when the tenants move out and turn the frig off and leave the doors closed.  It's real wet and humid inside and if it sets to long before someone else moves in and turns it on, the rust can form on the rotor.

You're getting down to 0 and below in the freezer so you know the sealed system/cooling is working fine, (I tell anyone if they have to lay the frig down to move it make sure to stand it back up right and let sit for at least 24 hours before plugging in).

If you are getting power to the evaporator fan motor and you don't hear any slight humming coming from the motor the the motor itself could be bad, I see lots of evaporator fan motor failures on these Frigidaire top freezer units.

Thanks for all this really good info!  I think we about have this licked.  Just need to get some better access to that fan.

While removing the icemaker last night, a fan fires up outta the blue.  A good sound! Maybe just the vibrations I created were enough?  Went ahead and mostly removed the cover (something hanging where the duct feeds into the fridge and I do not want to break anything) and see a light, even frost pattern - some had melted making very small puddle on fridge shelf.  No blocks of ice, nothing like that.

Loosely reattached cover.  Closed door, it started at about 60 in there but recovered a lot, quick.  This morning, -10.  And fridge at 34 (fridge control is on 5, 3 1/2 is midpoint).  Fan running.

When first started up unit hit mid-40's after many hours, then I stopped watching it (was not around for a while).    When I returned, it was at about 15 degrees lower than room temp, I guess that is the cold migrating down on its own.  That's where its been stuck at.  But to hit mid-40's seems like it would need the fan - unless it just ran so long on start-up that some extra cold migrated down.

I see that fan is not cheap (approx $110) but I have concerns on reliability.  Do I need to pry on something to get the evap cover to completely detach from the point where the duct leads into the fridge?  I tend to break these kinds of things.  Maybe just a drop or 2 of oil?  Not sure what the "rotor" is - the shaft that the fan blade is attached to?

Previous owner stated it had been sitting unused so he decided to sell it.  Almost new house, large, very nice, I imagine it had a very big and nice fridge in the kitchen so that sounds logical (if he does not feel that a large inventory of cold beer is essential).  He likely brought it from his prior place planning to use it and it wound up sitting.

Just to follow up, I did wiggle the evap cover off the back wall of the freezer and got a good look at the fan.  Checked connections, etc.  Everything visible looked clean, no rust or anything.  Put the cover back and monitored for a week, and it performs flawless.  I'm often not around a lot but that week I was.  I'm guessing once it got started up that broke loose whatever it was and it will be ok.  If not I know what to do.

Just curious about one thing I saw on another site:  Someone said if you move a fridge on its side, look at the compressor and the tubes.  Ignore the tube that goes nowhere.  Then be sure you lay it down with the tubes pointing up - so no oil goes into them.   Oil in the lines is not good.  This seems like a really good idea, very logical, but I have never heard it stated anywhere.  Any comments?  I think it may become my way of moving a fridge going forward.

Thanks for the help, the beer is ice cold now.

The important thing is that you leave it upright for long enough to allow the oil to run back down in the compressor, there is always oil travelling through the lines mixed with the refrigerant, but a large glut of it can cause the lines to be restricted, this is obviously NOT the case as you have an even frost pattern, you may have to replace your fan motor at some point
