Had the repair guy out to look at a huge chunk of ice that's formed in the back of the unit behind the drawers. It's stacked up pretty high in the drain and goes well up behind the back cover. Said I needed to replace the "heater". Wrote Heater, 148 heater, and Defrost Limit on my receipt for the service call ($80). Are these straightforward replacements? If so, where should I buy these parts and is there a service manual available for this freezer? Also, what's the difference between that 601F and the 601F/F? Is the 601F/F the same as a 601F-2? Thanks. Last edited on Tue Jul 21st, 2009 06:37 pm by trueguru |

Defrosted the freezer yesterday. Dried out the chamber near the tray that contained all the wires. Checked the resistance on the Defrost Heater, Tray Heater, Drain Tube Heater, and checked the function of the Defrost Terminator. All were good. Checked that voltage was going to the components. All good. And finally cooled the system down a bit and did a defrost by holding the ICE key for 5 seconds. Everything warmed up fine. Cleaned every thing up and put it back together. Here's the problem. Woke up this morning and put my fingers in the defrost drip tray and there is a bit of ice in there. I fired up the defrost again with the ICE key and waited 4 minutes, put my finger in the tray and the ice is slushy. So it seems the heater isn't quite powerful enough. But, the resistance checked out fine and it was fully in contact with the bottom of the tray. Any ideas? Is there a bigger heater available for the 601F? I do run it at -5oF and have done that for the last 6 years.

UPDATE. Got off the phone with Sub Zero. They said they have an alternative defrost terminator that shuts off at 70oF rather than 55oF. I'm going to try that. They also have an auxiliary trough heater that was originally for the 501F, but would work. I'm not to that stage yet. Still can't figure out what the change was in the machine?
