Can anyone tell me all the components on top of pics? Since there is digital control panel, is there still defrost timer, etc? Last edited on Thu Jul 30th, 2009 01:21 am by equalizer |

Thanks, What about the black and gray components under the fan and above the defrost bi-metal? Do you know what the frost on bottom indicates? it looks undercharged to me. what kind of hack tech would walk away from this fridge saying all is well? Is metal strip between the fridge and freezer door hot? I would make them remove the current charge, pull a vacuum on the system, then weigh in the new charge according to the label. you paid a premium for professional service and didnt recieve it.

Thanks for the advice. Do you mean the rightmost metal strip in my photos? In SoCal, prices are to the moon. First company I hired came over and replaced start comp. with 3-1 one device. It didn't start compressor, and he only charged $50 and took his device. But he damaged my relay and couldn't put it back the way it was. He seemed knowledgeable. Later he said compressor was 470 + labor = 800. Sears has part for 300, so I didn't want to haggle and looked elsewhere. Most firms wouldn't replace compressors or give a quote over phone for compressor replacement, so I went with first BBB good rated firm that did. But it turns out tech has only replaced 20 compressors and eqpt looked old and he seemed to be guessing at charge level! With all the reports I've read of early compressor failure, seems like an opportunity for smart people. PS I should help out in computer forum, where I may be able to share advice!

Maybe i sell myself short but i quote $500 parts and labor to replace the whirlpool and maytag compressors. At that cost most people opt out of repair and buy new, if i was any higher i wouldn't be able to sell any of them. At that price, my profit covers my daily overhead cost including my pay for the whole day. I can do that job...properly...in an hour. maybe i was hasty to call the guy a hack, im sleep deprived and cranky. it sounds like a father/son operation, make dad come out and have him get it right. I would not accept a top off, i would demand an evacuation and fresh refrigerant weighed in. You cannot properly charge a domestic refrigerator by observing the gauges. you can get it close, but not perfect.

Since he damaged your Relay, he should have had one on his truck to replace yours (no charge) OR not chagred you the $ 50 for the service call since he left the Fridge worse than it was.

Company said tech was sick and I could just pick another company and they would refund all my money. I said OK. That's great customer service. Now to pick another company in San Diego. Dare I pay Sears $250 upfront for repair that will cover up to $500 parts and labor? If I get ref in good shape with recharge I will send first company check for the parts. Would there be any problem with putting off repair for a week? Temp is freezer is 1-6 degrees depending how much its opened, compressor still running 90%. Do you think they said he was sick because he didnt know how to fix it? i cant imagine they would have the skill to install the compressor but not charge it properly. at first i attributed it to lazyness now im confused. can you post a picture of the install job on the compressor?

Its a pain to get back there with island right in front of fridge and wife doesn't want me messing up kitchen. I'll wait to get credit before I do anything. Repair looked OK, but don't know if he used correct "solder" or proper material name.

Yikes, that bullet valve access should NOT be still on there, that's just asking for a leak. There is also a whole lot of dust and crap in the condenser which needs to be cleaned out (on a regular basis)

yep, the bullet valve shoud be replaced along with the filter drier. I have never seen that capacitor configuration on a newer refrigerator, mostly on commercial units. are you sure he installed the right compressor? the braze joints look ok, he got them a little hot but they should be fine.

I don't know if it is the right compressor. However, the sheet that came with compressor states that usage is for domestic refrigerators and freezers. It took the tech 30 minutes to figure out how to put the cap on because there were no directions for assembly. I asked why he couldn't call Embraco tech support if there is a number. The original compressor has been replaced according to searsdirect and at repairclinic. However, there is no data that I can decipher on the original compressor. The data sheet for the new one states 1/5 nominal HP. Cant tell for old one. Same company Embraco, but different series. I really doubt that I can call Embraco and ask them what the difference is between the compressors. Have any of you pros ever tried to call compressor company for tech support?
