I have a GE PSS25MGNA BB side-by-side fridge. After returning from vacation this past week, it was working fine, but the freezer section showed signs that it had thawed everything and refroze. Then a few days ago, after about a week since the last thaw (I'm guessing) we found that everything in the freezer had thawed again, and the ice had all melted into water. That night, after several hours (and cleaning everything out and throwing it away), it started working again and was -10 degrees again now for three days. It sounds normal and appears to be cooling properly when it runs. I'm wondering if it is going into defrost mode and not cycling back to normal. Based upon numerous threads here, I'm wondering if it is the motherboard and/or temperature sensors??? I would suspect the thermistor? Before asking dumb questions, I wanted to run diagnostics on it which threads here suggest are available, but all the links that show how to run them appear to no longer be valid. Can anyone post current links, or is the solution here obvious to the experienced? It's running fine now, but I'm guessing it will do it again in the next few days. Thanks for any help.

I would suspect replacing the motherboard will solve the problem, might see a burnt area around the compressor relay on the back of the board...

Microsoft abandoned the MSN Groups and the links are no longer valid... please post where the links were found so that the Samurai can correct them. PM your email address and I'll email the GE Artica Profile 31-9072 Service Manual manual sent Last edited on Sun Jun 28th, 2009 07:09 pm by RegUS_PatOff ____________________ RegUS_PatOff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPAY2LsKVEw my video production: “Easter Seals Walk With Me” (also in HQ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EBiLyYXMiA Upon leaving this Earth "Do you want the Smoking or Non-Smoking section ?" |

Those aren't the MSN Group threads I was thinking about .. Those were posted by the individual Posters... such photo postings usually expire after a certain time .. you'd have to check with the Original Poster ..

Thanks very much for the manual. I did get it to perform the self tests and put it into defrost mode, which it recovered from correctly. I am puzzled though as it is failing the 0 3 test - Temperature control panel to dispenser board communication. I can't see how that could have anything to do with this issue however??? Unless... that just indicates a general motherboard problem. I'm still assuming that it is the motherboard, and that it doesn't necessarily fail everytime it does defrost, or manually initiating it isn't the same as it doing it on its own, or that defrost has nothing to do with it and it just does this every few days. I'm curious though, on a normal basis, with the doors opened a few times a day in normal use, how often should one expect the fridge to defrost? The manual says anywhere from 8 hours to 60 hours of compressor run time, but I don't know what that translates into in actual use.

Thanks. That's about what I figured then taking the average of everything would mean it defrosts about every 4 days. Might be a little too frequent to be connected to the problem, unless it isn't doing it every defrost cycle. Any idea what the failed 0 3 test means? Thanks.

Okay, been watching this thing a bit before pulling the trigger on a new motherboard as I wanted to be pretty sure that was the only thing wrong... (I'm fortunate to have a garage fridge that can cover for a while.) Yesterday, it quit cooling again and has not started again now even after about 24 hours. It just sits running its internal fans. It's about room temperature inside now, no warmer. I have tried and tried to get it to go into diagnostics, but it won't. The control panel just sits there displaying 5's for each setting, but won't start diagnostics. I still suspect the motherboard, especially with the diagnostics thing, and the fact that it has not made any noises or given any indication the sealed system has a problem, but the fact that it has not started cooling again makes me hesitant. I don't want to invest in a motherboard if the sealed system has a problem and I don't think I want to invest in repairs to the sealed system as (surprise, surprise, given it's a GE) we've never been overly thrilled with this unit. Would those with more knowledge than me on this thing still try a new motherboard, or follow a different path?

Replace the motherboard, order it thru this site, if it does not solve the problem it can be returned within 30 days for full credit less shipping both ways...is that a deal or what?

Okay, you all nailed it, right down to the burnt area near the outputs for the compressor. Swapped out the board and off it went. Must say it would have helped if GE paid more attention to the quality control on their repair manuals. Before pulling the board (and finding the charing on the back), I decided to test the outputs to the compressor as the trouble shooting flow charts suggested. I did just like it said... looked for 120V between J7 pin 9 orange wire and J11, black wire. Uh, wait a second... J11 is a brown wire and is labeled "LINE". J8 is a black wire and labeled "COMP". J7 to J11 does have 120V suggesting the board is good... hmmm, J7 to J8 though, does not... I think we know which to believe here. Pulled the board, found the charring, swapped it. Good to go. Much thanks to all and I have happily made my contribution to the United Samarai Beer Fund. Well worth it.
