Hi Volkeman,

I read the thread, got out  my20x loupe, and on the bak of J8 where a glob and ribbon meet is either a partial crack or just solder pooling marks.

Seems to me that while turning my engorged eyeballs bloodshot reading forum posts. that Samurai had a post on soldering.  No flux solder if I recall(I'll re-read).  What type soldering iron?  Go to Radio Shack I suppose.  All I have is propane and mapp gas.

First I think I'll find something with more magnification.  Could a partial crack do this?

thanks

tim

If it's a "leg" of a Relay or the J8 connector, that may be the problem...

... no acid core flux, only rosin core flux

Hi,

Got the stuff to solder with, practiced on an old board, put a nice looking glob where I thought it might be cracked,  plugged back in.  Settings were at 0 and 37F.  The freezer went up to 8 deg, then down to zero.  Stayed at 0 and 36 for about 23 hours.  Then freezer climbed to 25 and ff to 40 and I jumped J8 and J7-9 and started the compressor to start cooling again.  Freezer temp began a slow decline and now is at 0 and 37 five hours later.

Thought we had a winner with the soldering.  Not all was lost.  I got up the nerve to solder the board, and at least had no collateral damage.  Where to from here,o' masters of wisdom?

ff

Greetings!

For some reason this post was not on my 'watched' list, even though I contributed.

Forgive the lateness of my reply. I see you are offline now, and have methods to keep the appliance limping for now.

CONGRATULATIONS on making the jump into hardware repair. I will be here until 10pm eastern, then checking in at 4:45am. Various times while at work.

Volkeman,

I didn't mean to drag you into this.  I'm not really sure what kind of coverage these threads are supposed to have.  I'll take suggestions from anyone, even your blue-eyed cat.

thanks

:D Nah... you didnt drag me in. I was here already!

Last update was "I jumped J8 and J7-9 and started the compressor to start cooling again"

Still the case?

And you mentioned that when you test the voltage, often times the compresser will start.  What are you using to test the voltage? I assume it is the ohm/multi meter mentioned earlier...

The test starting the compressor may be beacause the pressure on the board is closing a gap in a connection sometimes- thats how I found the bad solder joints on the other board. When I would apply gentle finger pressure on top of the board,(IN A SAFE PLACE- top of a plastic relay case, etc) the compressor would start. The arcing across the small gap will sometimes weld itself closed to allow it to continue, but wont have the strength to allow for another startup.

Blue eyed cat...funny....

Volkeman,

I believe you're right.  When I press lightly on the plug block that J8 is in,a relay clicks on and off. I suppose I should pull board and look for bad solder joints again.  I'll do that and report findings.  That won't be until tonight or tomorrow

thanks again,

tim ff

Yeah...I think you just have to go over most of the larger solder points with a hot, clean iron tinned lightly.

If you were not aware, a wet (doesnt have to be in a puddle..) sponge makes a great tip wipe for your iron, and having a clean tip is essential for heat transfer. A couple quick swipes/wipes across the sponge, rotating the iron to get all the gunk off. No need to hold it on there and sizzle away.

Wipe, apply firmly to solder point, with light to moderate pressure, then apply a touch of solder. There seems to be a lot of nasty flux on these boards, so clean the tip often.

Best of luck.

Hi

I did a resolder on the J8 to relay strip.  Had good results for 26 hours.  Woke up freezer at 36F.    Pulled MB solder had a small hole in the side on one end.  Got some de-soldering braid (this stuff is really great) and redid this part. Now I have a real solid solder and pressing on the board no longer starts the compressor.  After this solder, temps went up to 41 and41.  I disconnected power for 15 sec. to reset.  Nothing for along time(3-4 min) then comp started and it's been -1or 0 and 36 or 37F for 24 hours.  I'm not going to celebrate until it's been 3 days or so.  Thanks for the sponge tip for soldering Volkemon.  Keeping fingers crossed and going back to my dishwasher that wasn't fixed after all.

thanks  again

tim
