My subzero 561 is having an issue, first it wouldn't get colder then48 degrees all the way on 10, then I realized it is actually cold at the bottom and the stuff in the produce trays is freezing but the top is 48-50 degrees. If I turn it down to 9 the temp goes significantly up in the whole regrigerator. The freezer side seems fine. I vaccumed the condensor coils. Before i did that the frame of the door was hot to touch now it is just luke warm. Anye help is greatly appreciated.

not sure how to tell, I don't fit inside to see if the light goes off, I guess I can push the button in the door frame to see if the light goes off, will that work?

ok at the top of the refrigerator door there are 2 switches. When I manually push the left one the light goes out. When I manually push the right one a fan or blower comes on. It looks like they are pushing enough to activate when the door is closed but I can't tell for sure. I pushed them up further with a butter knife and the door closed and I can not tell if the sound changes. Thank you for the help....

this is an airflow problem. either the evaperator is frosted over or the fan isnt running with the door shut. I recently replacd a fan switch on one of these. compare the fan and light switches, when you press both in do they trigger at about the same point?

the fan comes on when the lever is just barely pushed so I think it is coming on. How can I check the evaporator? Do I have to open the other side of the top (the side on the left)(the condensor coils are on the right side. There is a metal covering on the left side, I am not sure how to take it off. I don't see any screws in it. Thank you Suzanne

I just played with the switch in the door and made the fan kick on and off for about 50 times and now the fan is not kicking on. How do I tell what the problem is and what to replace? Again thank you for all the help

oh...I tried it again a few minutes later and the fan came on just fine. It comes on when the trigger is barely pushed. I can't really tell when the compressor is on or not, it is always pretty loud, I have the temp dial at 10 which is the maximum. At that setting the top of the fridge is at 48 and the bottom produce drawer is 37

more info. I tried it again and now the fan in fridge did not come on, so I tried the one in the freezer and it did come on. I am not sure if they each operate independently, but if they don't it seems if the fan is working in the freezer it should work in the fridge.

When you said the fan comes on, do you hear the motor running?? the fresh food side is separate from the freezer side...each side has their own evaporator.... Remove the rear panel in the fresh food side and see if there is a fan blade on the motor shaft, it may have fallen off ( cracked with age, defect, or ??) If I could only remember, the fan blade on some 500 series was updated from a gray? to a white? color........ fan blade color was changed to differentiate the improved air flow blade........The fresh food side is an off cycle defrost, ( no heater ) But it could frost over if there are long run cycles with frequent door openings or the door being left open..... If you hove the service manual now, take a look at the fan and the evap coils. Page 4-51 ........keep us posted...................

The fan appears to be white, and it has 5 blades on it. I still think it is more than circulation because with the setting at 10 the cold part should be colder than 37 (from the spec manual a setting of 5 should get the temp down to the low 30s).

Do I have to pull the refrigerator out of the cabinet to check this? It is built in and really tough for me to pull out from the wall. Unfortunately I think I have to pay a technician to come out if I have to pull it out. I can't do that by myself. Thanks suzanne Last edited on Sat May 23rd, 2009 08:14 pm by ncalsuz |

It looks like I have 2 people asking me to do things. To remove the panel in the refrigerator side, is that done inside the refrigerator? Then person #2 is asking me to check page 17 removing the freezer fan. My issues appear to be in the refrigerator side why do I need to remove the freezer fan? Thanks again Suzanne

Model 561 with freezer on the left side and the fresh food on the right side..... The work is done from the inside, start with opening the right door, mark the shelf and drawer locations ( for reinstalling later )......On the right side remove the drawers and the shelfs, remove the light lens, remove the fan cover, remove the rear panel, (The large flat panel at the rear ) See page 4-48 and 4-49 for items .... When the items are removed, what you are looking at is a small version of a car radiator, look at page 4-51 Item #78 What does it look like ...If the unit is running , is there a coating of frost from top to bottom, left side to the right side?????? P.S. did you down-load the sevice manual ?? P.P.S. can you post a picture of the evap panel for us to view ??.............................................P.P.S.S. Almost forgot.. Remove power first.. look on page 4-49 remove the grill Item #1 look all the way to the left there is a power connector, just unplug it, it kills the power to the whole unit.........After you get the panel removed, the cold control will stay....hang the cold control from the rear wall with a piece of duct tape and be sure to put a piece of electrical tape around the electrical contacts so that they cannot touch anything...... DO NOT kink or bend the capillary tubes attached to the cold controls..... Plug the connector back together watch the panel...............
