Seems to come on with compressor or fan?  About every half second, and then it stops for a period of time.  Thought it might be coming out of bottom freezer but don't think so.  Any suggestions?

My moon shine drinking friend - does the knocking happen when the comp. starts or after it has been running for 10 min. or so? Is it just a few knocks or lasts for minutes? May have to take access panel off at the back and have a look see. Also , clean the coils while there.

Have to narrow down where the noise is comming from. Could be as simple as evaporator tubing noise, or, these models are also known for a noisy damper motor (up in the beer section).

Now it seems like the refrigerator has stopped cooling, but freezer seems to be working. Is that possible? Still have the knocking/thudding sound coming out of the unit but have not been able to pinpoint it as I am laid up on crutches

Noise is definitely coming from the compressor area.  It is thumpming, knocking for a long period then stops.  Freezer is cold but not frige.  Any thoughts?

Chat, could you please elaborate on this, "these models are also known for a noisy damper motor",  such as, is there a fix besides replacing the damper motor?

The reason I ask, an Amana ABB2224DEW that I'm working on is having this exact problem.  11/25/08 I went and diagnoised damper was making the offending noise customer was complaining about and tried a fix of injecting the motor and gearbox with lube.  This quieted it down very good and thought this would take care of the problem.   Both use "Air Damper Control 67003903".

Then on 12/10/08 got a recall, making noise again, so ordered new damper control and installed on 12/18/08.

Now, 4/6/08 got a call that it is making noise again, and sure enough it is, just not as noisy as the first original bad control but still loud enough to annoy customer.

I'm replacing the control for my customer at no charge and only charging them cost for the new damper since it is out of the new CRAPPY manufacture 90 day warranty.

Are there any service flashes pertaining to this and/or a better or different control to use?

Is the compressor itself stopping, or just the noise? Maytag slso had serious problems with compressors on bottom-mount units. What is the manf. name on the compressor?

Whirlpool came out with a fix:

Noisy Damper Kit

They moved the motor to the side and included a harness adapter. Still have to replace the motor, but with this modification, it seems to solve the noise issue...

Can anybody suggest what could be my problem? Could it be a compressor if my freezer still works?

If the freezer is working , the comp. is working , but it could be the noise. With no cooling in the fridge section , you are not getting the cold air over from the freezer section. The first things that you should check are : fan running in freezer section , damper in fridge section open to allow air , too much frost on evaporator not allowing air movement.             If you can not get down to check the comp. noise , get some one to take rear cover off back of fridge and get comfy and wait for noise. There are not that many moving parts on a fridge , so keep looking - you will find it ..

OK, got the bottom back panel off. Compressor is working and noise is NOT coming from it. Saw fan come on. Noise seems to be coming from back wall of bottom freezer. Looked inside freezer and looks like coils are frozen over. Can't figure out noise. Will unplug overnight.

As in packed in fuzzy frost?  If so, fuggetabout the noise-- you have a defrost failure problem to troubleshoot.

I'd start by getting access to the freezer coils (which you've already done since you reported that the coils were frosted over) and testing the defrost tstat and defrost heaters for continuity.  Note that the defrost tstat needs to be at freezer temps before testing it or it'll read open.
