Dear Wise One,

I've got this fridge that displays error code Er FF in the LED display window. After checking your forum it seems like the advice was to replace the freezer fan and the motherboard.

$200 in parts later I've got the same problem. When I restart the fridge everything is working fine. The fan is spinning (I've left the icemaker and interior panels off just in case that something was binding the fan up). The freezer fan spins just fine (holding the door switch closed).

Anyhow, after some random amount of time, the error code FF reappears. This one has got me stumped. It would sound like the only thing I have not replaced is the wiring from the motherboard to the fan, but that sounds like mission impossible and I can't see if the wiring was bad why it would work for a while.

There is no frost/ice blocking the fan. The fan spins freely. It works fine again after the error if I just unplug/plug back in the fridge.

Any ideas?

You sure that FF was not for the fresh food side fan??  Also you have to reinstall all panels inside of the refrigerator for proper air flow, put them back into place to be sure that is not causing problems....

Dear Pegi,

Thank you for your response.

According to the manual, FF is the freezer fan (so I'm pretty sure I replaced the right one).

Even with panels back in place, I still get the error message (I then removed the panels to insure that the fan was not binding on a panel or getting frozen over).

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Bob

Problem solved and I am an official idiot! Just to record it for internet history (just in case there are any others as dumb as I am)...

When I ordered the replacement fan, I ordered by mistake the refrigerator side fan and not the freezer fan. Both fans are the same size and use the same connector (though the freezer fan is white in color with a white connector and the refer fan is black in color with a blue connector)

The freezer fan has electronics in the fan that allow the fan to run under lower voltage and slow the fan (it also reports the slower fan signal to the motherboard).

Since I replaced it with the single speed refer fan, when the motherboard reduced the voltage to slow the fan, the fan stopped, the motherboard caught the fan stoppage and threw the error code.

The RepairClinic part link for the freezer fan is: Item 1330410 http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=t-lrsc26910tt-%3d%3dc203i1330410&PartID=1330410

The refer side is: Item 1330411 http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=t-lrsc26910tt-%3d%3dc203i1330411&PartID=1330411

In the end, I think my motherboard was fine and it was solely a freezer fan failure (just like the error code showed).

Hope this helps someone,

Bob

Your model does not have two interior fans. The only LG ref. that has two interior fans, that I have seen in the 7 years we have been an LG auth. servicer, are the models w/ the ice maker in the door. The second fan is air cirulation through the ice room. The FF code is most commonly from a frost build up around the fan blade. This is caused by excessive moisture in the home getting into the ref., a bad defrost controller ( causes the fan to come on too soon after defrost thereby circulating steam around the back panel and through the fan opening and fresh food damper duct ). It is possible that the fan was bad. If the fault re-occurs check the frost issue. Also have experienced, once, a bad fan motor harness connector in the freezer.

Thank you clman for your response. You are right, this LG model does not have a refer fan. However, on the Parts Express website they do sell one, and, as I say if you use the wrong fan to install on the freezer side you definetly get a problem.

The advice I was trying to pass on for any future followers is make sure you order the right fan if your freezer fan fails. Since there are two different fans for sale, and they each use the same physical connector, you can replace a faulty fan and still get the same error (if you are dumb like me).

In my case, there was no freezing around the fan. Very simply a failed fan. I confirmed by hooking up a 12v power supply to the faulty fan, no spin.
