Hi. This is a 6-year old Viking range. The oven ignitors (round glow bars) come on and glow red/orange, but the gas valve is not opening. I've learned how the system works, and have been told that the glowbars may glow, but deteriorate after awhile and will not draw enough current to open the gas valve. I am not an appliance repair person, so I don't have a lot of diagnostic tools. I do not have a clamp-on amp meter to measure the current draw. I propose a test: What if I was to hook up a 60 watt light bulb in parallel with the glow bar. (safely, of course). This would increase the current draw across the circuit, causing the gas valve to "see" the full current a new glowbar would draw. If the gas valve opens during the test, then I've confirmed the glow bar is wearing out and needs to be replaced. Is there some reason why this simple test would not work? (I'm quite comfortable working around electricity; I've re-wired my entire house) I haven't delved into the oven yet (only removed the oven floor), so I don't know if there are one or two gas valves involved. There are two tubular burners (it's a large single oven), so are there two gas valves here? Neither burner is operating, both glow bar ignitors are glowing.

I work on lots of Viking ovens. Pegi is right about the igniters. Viking igniter's are notorious for poor quality control and short life spans. I learned a long time ago never to buy Viking igniters. Instead, I found that the Maytag igniter kit gives good longevity as a very reasonable price. And they fit perfectly in Viking ovens. Viking VGSC305-4BDSS oven igniter fix. Dishonerable igniter (1 of 2) will not light oven burner - I've obtained a maytag 12400035 to replace viking #@%^, but can't figure out how to get into the space to fix it. Which panels/parts need to come off to get me where I need to go? Will removing the 4" panel below the door do it (after removing mumified french fries)? All help much appreciated (beer fund will be severly rewarded)....

The panel in front, down by the floor, comes right off with a couple of screws. You'll see the white or tan wiring for the ignitors, just follow them to the ignitors themselves. This is easy; take your time and you'll figure it out.

Many thanks for the information in this thread. I was able to replace my own dishonorable ignitors with the above parts from Repair clinic (I did have to slice a few wires-but this should not deter you), and shazam!
