Hi folks, I've had a hard time finding any DIY info about this problem, so I'm hoping you guys can help. I know there's not much info on Kitchenaid mixers on this website, but you've helped me before, and I've got my fingers crossed that someone can help me again! So I inherited a Kitchenaid stand mixer from my sister, who used it pretty regularly to bake bread and various desserts for about four years. She never had any problems with it. I took it home with me and plugged it in to make some cookies (my girlfriend chose the recipe). It was one of those outlets in the kitchen with "test" and "reset" buttons. When I turned on the mixer, the reset button popped out, and nothing happened. I pressed the reset button back in and tried again. The same thing happened. There was a microwave plugged into the other outlet, but it wasn't in use at the time. I then moved the mixer to another similar outlet and had the exact same thing happen again. Twice. I finally moved the mixer to an outlet in the dining room without the "test" and "reset" buttons. The mixer turned on, but instead of mixing, it produced an acrid burning smell and produced a small wisp of white smoke from the back. The sound coming from the mixer sounded as if the motor was trying to run, but just gave off a loud electrical hum. I've googled this problem, but the only thing I can find are people who are complaining about similar problems. Kitchenaid is apparently incredibly unhelpful, choosing to direct people to their repair centers once the one-year warranty period has expired. I don't want to spend the $100+ that people are quoting from the repair centers. Can someone help or direct me somewhere else? Thanks so much in advance!

The most common problem on these are the brushes, (ref# 21 - one on each side), and the speed control plate on the back, (ref# 28).

Hi guys, Thanks for the replies, and especially for that PDF! I wasn't able to find anything that detailed as I was digging around. I think my problem is with the brushes. One of the brushes seemed to be sticking out of the body. I had never owned a mixer before, so I didn't know if that was normal. After finding some pictures, I realized it should be flush with the side of the unit. So I took a rubber mallet and gently tamped it back in place. After doing so, I tried the mixer again, and this time, the mixer actually worked for about 1/2 second. It rotated the mixing shaft about half a revolution and then stopped and produced the white smoke and loud humming sound again. I've read online that these brushes need to be aligned perfectly, so I wonder if I have to take it in to get the brushes realigned. And I don't think that's something I can do on my own. But referring specifically to your suggestions, is it possible to determine if the motor or speed control plate are bad just by visual inspection? What should I be looking for?

Thanks again, RegUS_PatOff. Yeah, I'm able to remove and reinstall the brushes without a problem. But my concern is that whatever caused the brushes to stick out (it was part 26 - the screw that holds the brush in place) caused some kind of misalignment inside. The screw was sticking out by probably 1/2 inch. My hunch is also based on the fact that the brush is speckled with a very fine black dust after I remove it. There's plenty of metal left at the end of it, so I don't think they need to be replaced just yet. I've read elsewhere that if the alignment is off by even a little bit, the machine won't function.
