SAVE THE STEAKS!!!!!
Not sure if the part number above is correct, but my Amana Side by Side has ice collecting at the bottom of the freezer, and I think it's not as cold as it has been in the past.
Sound familiar? Is this something a semi-handy non mechanical guy can fix? That is, fix the first time? Please let me know as soon as possible what your diagnosis may be.
Thanks,
Byron

Model number look OK.
What does the "ice" (collecting at the bottom of the freezer) look like ?
Is it clear, or heavy frost ?
Is the Compressor running "forever" (except when it's defrosting) ?
The Condenser Fan (by the Compressor) and the Evaporator Fan (inside the freezer) should be running anytime the Compressor runs.

The ice is clear - not frosty like the stuff on top of my expired ice cream. The compressor and the fans are running, and seem to run continuously lately.
The frozen stuff is staying frozen, so I am hopeful for an easy fix. Do my answers to your questions help with your diagnosis?

sounds like a sealed system leak, (not cheap)
Like the Samurai mentioned, if you could post some pictures of the Evaporator in the freezer, that would help.

Wait a minute here RegUS, clear ice in the bottom of the freezer on a side x side. He hasn't even looked at the evaporator yet and told what it looks like.
I say just a plugged up drain, and water spilling out making glacier on bottom of freezer floor everytime it goes into defrost.
But the running all the time and not cold enough, after looking at the evaporator we will know if we're looking at a sealed system problem.

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the responses. Correction on my earlier statement - the fan was not running this morning, but kicked on after opening the fridge a few times when fixing breakfast. I hope this clarification helps.
Here is my award-winning photo entitled "Evap Coil - 1 of a Series" Feast yer eyes! To me, it looks like the frost is lightly covering more than the top half of the coil. This would lead me to think that we're dealing with a plugged drain. However, I defer to your expert opinions. When you all finish your part time jobs and clock back in here at the website, please consider the evidence and dispense justice accordingly.
Thanks,
Byron

OK, thanks. I was thinking he may have been seeing the frost from the clogged evaporator coils.
I was also waiting for the pictures, also, it would be nice to know what the temperatures are in the freezer & the fridge sides:
"... and I think it's not as cold as it has been in the past..."
"...The compressor and the fans are running, and seem to run continuously lately..."
Looking at the picture, I don't see the frost I was thinking of, although it's hard to see any frost, unless it's just after a defrost cycle which seems to be working and he mentioned the fans are working.
The temperatures would be helpful.Last edited on Fri May 16th, 2008 01:58 by RegUS_PatOff

I don't have an adequate thermometer, but can get one if necessary. However, the stuff in the freezer is rock-hard and the stuff in the fridge seems to be as cold as it should be.
I know this isn't scientific, but I hope it helps. However, if I must take the box's temperature let me know.
Thanks,
Byron

I don't know, but from that picture, I don't see any frost on the evaporator coils.
Maybe it just came out of a defrost, it would have to be frosting if things are freezing solid in the freezer????
Just set the cover back over the evaporator, and make sure the evaporator fan is running, (unit is callling for cooling), and wait about an hour and take another picture of the evapaorator.

| I had to compress the picture for the website, so the frost is hard to see. However, there is frost on the coil and it is heaviest at the top, and not so much at the bottom. Anyone have any idea what's up with my freezer?

From my old tired eyes, it looks as if the top two loops of coils are frosted up and nothing on the botton ones. I assume the cap tube is going into the top of the evap coil. It seems to me that either the compressor has just come on and not frosted the evap coils yet, or there is a system leak. If you leave the coils bare, even with the fan running the coils should completely frost up in about 20 minutes, if things are working right. So my idea would be to make sure the compressor is running, and see if the coils frost up or not. Give us some more feedback about the coils frosting up.
