Help...I previously posted about a troublesome icemaker, only to discover that was due to a freezer that didn't get cold enough to make much ice (couple batches a day). On medium setting (5 or 6) the freezer gets down to 18 degrees Farenheit. On the coldest setting (10), it gets no colder. Any suggestions on where I should start to try and diagnose this problem? Fridge side is 39 F on standard setting which seems plenty cold enough. Thanks for the help!

Is the Freezer Compressor running "forever" ?
Depending on the serial number, the Condenser Fan should run continuously.
On the newer serial numbers, the Condenser Fan only runs when either Compressor runs.
Does the Freezer Evaporator Fan run when the Freezer Compressor runs (and the freezer door switch is closed) ?

If it was working properly, and you turn it up to max, the freezer should get to - 10 or so, and refrigerator section could get as low as 30.

| RegUS...the freezer compressor appears to be running all the time, but not the fridge compressor. The condensor fan is also (appropriately) running all the time. I don't know where to check the evaporator fan...where is it located? Last edited on Thu May 15th, 2008 11:32 by BTF

| You chould be able to hear it in the freezer, any time the Freezer Compressor is running, but you'll have to hold the freezer door switch. Attachment: Page from 3756330_1stEd_500Series_MnlCmplt_07-21-03.pdf (Downloaded 4 times) Last edited on Thu May 15th, 2008 15:52 by RegUS_PatOff

| Yes, the freezer evaporator fan does run continuously unless the freezer door is opened, presumeably because the freezer compressor is running nonstop...what else can I do to diagnose the problem? Thanks!

| RegUS...the evaporator coil is evenly frosted completely across the top 20-25% or so, but not frosted at all below that. Doesn't quite fit any of the examples in the eyeball test. Do you think the system just needs to be charged or is the compressor shot?

| The freezer appears to be cycling continuously from about 16 degrees C to almost 30 degrees C and back down. Doesn't this sound like something other than a compressor/sealed system failure? Help, Cactus Bob!

The Evaporator Coil should be frosted up after about an hour of running.
Does the Compressor run "forever", yet the Evaporator Coils never completely frost up ?
The system (slow leak) may be low on Freon, but how long will a charge last ?
