I have a KitchenAid Model: KUDP01ILWH5 (S/N: FR2702023) dishwasher. Over the weekend started making a loud buzzing noise while running. The diswasher still fills with water and the water sprays on both levels. I was also able to cancel the cycle and the water drained. The buzz is as loud as the buzzer on my clothes dryer.

My next step is probably to check the food chopper to see if something is in there, but I also think that the pump woudlnt' be working if that was the case. While the cycle seems to be running normally, that buzz sounds bad enough that I need to deal with it now.

Anyone have any guesses where to look and/or what is wrong?

Check the wash motor's run capacitor.

You very well could have a bad motor.

The first one of these that I ran into had a kind of high pitched squealing noise, I thought for sure something was stuck in the impeller.

Took it all apart made sure all was clear and still same noise, didn't sound like a bearing noise to me but that was exactly what it was.

The seals in these units will gradually go bad leaking only a small amount of water that drys up after the load or soaks into your floor under the dishwasher and you don't know about it until the motor is shot from the water leaking past the seal and into the front bearing of the motor.

Most likely if you pull the pump and motor assembly out you will see signs of leakage down the motor.

Newbie question -- how does one check the capcitor (other than listening for the noise from there). I'm looking at a parts diagram and I see that the motor is so close to that capacitor that it would be hard to tell which one is buzzing. Can I use a VOM to check the run capacitor?

The noise sounds like a stuck selenoid (except that there aren't any of those in the there).

My dishwasher (a Kenmore Elite/Whirlpool GU980SCGT3) has exactly the same symptom as the original poster's KitchenAid. I tried the link that Samurai Appliance Repair Man so kindly supplied and discovered it is now broken. After searching a bit on the internet, I think I've found the diagram that the above link used to go to:

Forget the capacitor; the noise will either be from the motor bearing as our friend Willie eluded to, or there will be a bunch of crap (popcorn kernels,toothpicks,bone fragments,lego pieces etc) contacting the spinning chopper blade. either you can clean the debris out and you'll be good to go, or you'll be facing a sump and motor replacement

If it's the bearing (and I'm guessing it is since we rinse before we put dishes in the washer), can I just replace the bearing? Or will I need a whole new motor? Or new motor AND pump?

Usually you can see a white stain on the bottom of the sump below the seal indicating seal leakage- might be worth a bit of disassembly if you can get away with removing some debris/broken glass etc - otherwise the economical way to repair is by changing out the whole assembly

Bruin- it could also be the solenoid on the dispenser. I haven't looked at your console but if you have a hi temp scrub and energy saver dry push hi temp-dry-hi temp-dry it will start a quick diagnostic cycle. if you get the buzzing before the motor comes on it will be the dispenser.

Thanks guys.

I found the Technical Service Data sheet online and figured out how to run a diagnostic cycle. On my washer it's Power Scour - Air Dry - Power Scour - Air Dry.

I started a diagnostic cycle, the lights blinked and the dishwasher started to fill. After filling, it started washing. A couple of minutes later the water heater light came on. I let it continue washing for several (6-8) minutes. This didn't seem like a "quick diagnostic cycle" as described in the data sheet. It really seemed like a normal wash cycle.

Anyway, I did not hear the buzz while the machine was washing. Eventually I got tired of listening to the washer wash and pressed Cancel. The washer started pumping water out just like normal. No buzzing yet.

Near the end of the drain cycle, as the machine got close to finishing pumping the water out, the buzzing started. It was not very loud at first, but it became louder as less and less water was available to pump out.

I'm guessing this means something's wrong with the pump. It buzzes when it doesn't have enough water to pump. Any thoughts on whether this means the whole pump needs replacing? Is it possible that I can just replace the impeller?

At repairclinic.com I see several possibilities for replacing parts of the pump up to replacing the entire pump and motor assembly. Naturally, I'd like to avoid replacing the whole thing if I really only need to replace some parts. Any thoughts?

Make sure that you have your drain hose looped upwards. I've seen what you're talking about happen when the drain hose just goes straight down into a hole in the floor.

My original post was just intended to add the diagram that was lost when Samurai's link got broken. I really don't have time to repair my own dishwasher right now because I'm leaving tomorrow to attend my son's wedding. But someone responded to my post and it kind of snowballed from there.

I'll start a new topic when I return, summarizing the information in this topic that's relevant to my situation.
