Hello!! This is my first post, so please excuse me if I go about this wrong...lol.. A friend called this morning in a panic! Its his turn to make dinner for the inlaws tonight! Ha Ha,.. I am just a wee grasshopper with only a few years of fixing appliances so I am still very new to all this... I searched the posts and found a similiar problem saying it would be the burner control what do you think guys?
Is there a way I can get him up an running tonight while he waits for the correct part to come in?
I also read that someone unplugged the burner control and tried it that way but it threw some codes (f-7) and STILL heated up?.. and that maybe meant that the surface element board was at fault...would it be a logical idea to start by unplugging the burner control board and if it still heats up it would be the surface element board?

Thanks for reading my long winded post!

Thanks again and Happy New Year!

your probably gonna have to post a wiring diagram for this stove because we cant look up Canadian models.....chances of getting it going tonight is slim to none.

Thanks for the reply! I told him that he probably wont have it working, because if I unplug anything it will flash error code(s) and be unusable... I will see if I can get the wiring diagram scanned (dont have a scanner)  and post it...

Thanks again!

well us canadians cant look up the kenmore either

you say flash codes, am i to assume the surface units have a digital readout?

if its a frigidaire you might be able to unplug a wire from the element(i dont think the user interface board tests elements)

top is hinged, 2 screws underneath and it lifts on its hinges(its live even with switches turned off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

tell them to tape it off well

btw if it is a friggy with digital display its more likely a bad relay board than the potentiometer(switch)

I found a link on another site that shows a unit with a model # of 970.440834 (made by Frigidaire) it appears to be a slide in unit...there are no knobs or rheostats to control the burners everything is pushbutton like an oven...I don't know if his looks like this or not but I have never personally worked on one of these...

If this is the unit in question and I'm reading this diagram right...you should be able to unhook the burner in question and the others still work...it might code the one but it looks to be independent of the others...unless one code locks out the entire board....

yup its the friggy, you might get away with unplugging the burner, (tape off each wire seperate)... but you might get the dreaded f9 code (something is broken) if so they are SOL

tell us which burner stays on and now that the grand poobah has pasted wiring diagram (BTW poobah where you find this stuff?) we can tell you how to test for a stuck relay on the board(cause i'm thinkin thats your prob)

Man that poohbah knows how to find a schematic!!!  Hey I did what you guys suggested and unhooked the wires that feed the left side of the cooktop..and well it WORKED!!! My buddy was sooo happy!!!!!

So Brnt Toast...you said you could show me how to test the relays.....would it be easier to replace the relay or the power control board (part # 97a on page 2 of the pdf link from poohbah)

Thanks again guys you really helped me out and boosted my confidence!!!

#97 on page 4 is the relay board

its on the back of the unit, to test just read the board, all the relays should be labeled RF etc  find the relay for the element that doesn't turn off, unplug one wire and test the relay for continuity, you will find the relay is closed even with the oven powered off, if so you need a relay board

now if this truely is a buddy and your solder skills are good, some models have an extra unused relay, you can take the unused one off the board and replace the stuck one..... gotta be good with the iron

but hey the way i look at this one is, even if relay change doesn't work, they still need a board anyways, no loss to the customer..... just wait till after the holidays to attempt it incase anything goes really wrong:P

BrntToast,...you were right on the money on this one as usual !!!! I just got the board today and finished the job for my buddy,...Works great! no sign of burn of the relay but I tested for continuity once I had it out and sure enough it was stuck closed!

Thanks again all! you guys ROCK!!!!!
